In August, you can still propagate hydrangea by cuttings. And although the optimal time for these purposes is the end of June - the beginning of July, but if you adhere to some rules, it is also quite possible to prepare excellent planting material in the last month of summer
What cuttings of hydrangea to take and how to prepare them
Why is it better to breed hydrangeas in the first half of summer? During this period, you can prepare non-lignified cuttings. Both green cuttings and twigs, on which buds have just begun to appear, take root well. But in August, cuttings can also be rooted, although during this period they are more difficult to take.
To increase the percentage of success, you need to know how to choose and prepare a cutting:
• first of all, it is better to take the cutting from that part of the plant, which is located in partial shade. Here in August there is a chance to find completely non-lignified shoots;
• Do not take the thickest and thinnest shoots for rooting. Choose cuttings of medium thickness - strong enough to take root, but not yet fully lignified, otherwise the process may take a long time;
• separate the stalk from the shoot, leaving a "heel" with an influx - in this place callus forms faster and roots develop best. But, of course, if the shoot is long with several pairs of leaves, then with a "heel" you will get only one;
• remove the bottom leaf or a couple;
• Leave the top pair of leaves, but cut the plastic sheets by half;
• Cut a stalk about 1 cm above the top pair of leaves.
When planting, bury the lower pair of buds with removed leaves into the ground.
Methods for rooting cuttings of hydrangea
There are two ways to root hydrangea cuttings:
• in a pot (jar, bottle);
• in the open field.
Regardless of which method you choose, you need to create greenhouse conditions for the cuttings. If you are rooting a stalk in an open field garden, cover it with a clipped plastic 5 liter. When doing this in a pot or jar, place a tall 1, 5, or 2 liter bottle on top. It is better to cut off the bottom of it, and leave the neck with the lid. Then the lid can be unscrewed in order to ventilate the contents and the handle does not rot.
If a suitable bottle was not in the house and everything has already been used for other needs in the country, then stick a stick or knitting needle into the pot with a handle and put a bag on top. The wand will hold the bag over the handle like a hut.
Rooting conditions for hydrangea cuttings
It is very important that the soil in which the hydrangea takes root is not flooded with water. And the soil mixture must be taken loose, in which water does not stagnate. Many cuttings are rooted in so-called "mud" or "porridge". But this option is not suitable for hydrangea - it rots and molds from excess moisture. Moderate hydration is recommended for her. Therefore, another important condition is good drainage. You don't have to worry about this in the open field - the water will pass to the depth. And when the cutting takes root in a pot or jar, then you need to take care of both the drainage holes and the drainage layer so that the water does not stagnate.
Another important point is the rooting temperature. The optimal indicator for this is + 20… +24? С. If the thermometer drops below +20? C, the stalk will start to rot. This also needs to be taken into account in cool August. And when you feel that the air is getting cooler, then it is better to refuse from rooting in the open ground in favor of a pot in the house.
In addition, the pot with the rooting cuttings should not be kept in the sun, but in the shade. And for rooting in open ground, it is also necessary to select a place where the sun does not burn.

The Subtleties Of Propagation Of Indoor Flowers By Cuttings
Propagating flowers by cuttings is easier than growing them from seeds. This technique allows you to quickly get a well-formed and flowering plant. Whereas when grown from seeds, not every flower is able to present with buds in the first year. This method of reproduction is called vegetative. Although, despite its simplicity, not everyone succeeds in it either. And all because different plants have their own developmental characteristics. Some cuttings take root well when they are cut from both the bottom and the top
