Planting and care
It is recommended to plant hydrangea in fertile soil fertilized with manure. As for the location, it is best to give preference to sunny corners or areas with little shading for its placement. It is important not to forget that this plant needs protection from the scorching sun and drafts.
It's no secret that hydrangea is very partial to water, which means that it should be watered abundantly. Ideally, it is generally better to use rainwater for irrigation, and immediately after watering it will not hurt to slightly loosen the soil near each bush.
And hydrangea is also endowed with the ability to change color - if you add a little ink to the water intended for irrigation, and then pour such water on a white hydrangea, its beautiful flowers will gradually turn into pleasant purple tones. And the alum added to the water helps to give the flowers a delicious bluish tint!
Top dressing
As soon as the beautiful hydrangea begins to bloom, it is necessary to apply liquid mineral fertilizer under the bushes - this magnificent plant boasts an amazing responsiveness to feeding.
The hydrangea planted in April-May after a year does not hurt to feed it with a special composition, for the preparation of which, for each square meter of plantings, they take 30-40 g of superphosphate, 30 g of potassium sulphide and 20 g of urea.
The next top dressing is recommended when inflorescences begin to form on the bushes. In this case, the top dressing should consist of 70 g of superphosphate and 40 g of potassium sulphide (also for each square meter).
And at the end of August or at the beginning of September, it will not hurt to additionally add a couple of buckets of rotted manure or compost under each bush. If the leaves of the hydrangea are too pale, it is possible that it also lacks iron.
Pruning
Pruning hydrangeas should be done every year. This is usually done in the spring, as soon as the snow melts. In this case, the very first pruning is carried out only when the plants reach five or even six years of age - earlier pruning can significantly worsen their survival rate.
When pruning, all broken, old and often flowering branches must be removed. At the same time, young shoots are shortened by about fifteen to twenty centimeters. Simultaneously with pruning, it will not hurt to mulch the trunks with sawdust.
By the way, hydrangea very easily tolerates pruning, which in turn makes it possible to give it absolutely any shape!
Shelter for the winter
For the winter, the hydrangea must be covered. Without waiting for the first frost, its shoots are tilted along the diameter of the bush, and then a couple of buckets of peat are poured into the very middle, which will protect the root system from freezing, which is fatal for it. Next, the bushes are covered with fallen leaves and the film is laid on top, pressing it with bricks. Such a shelter will help the beautiful hydrangea to survive the winter much easier. But pruning a garden hydrangea for the winter is strongly discouraged!
