Perennial ground cover plants are the best choice of flower bed plants for those who want beauty and do not want to devote much time to this beauty. It is enough to plant once, devote a minimum of time, and every year you will have a beautiful flower bed

In previous articles, we looked at several perennial ground cover plants. With this article I want to end the cycle.

Bell of Portenchlag

A beautiful short, no more than 20 centimeters in height, a plant with blue-violet flowers in the shape of stars. It is especially beautiful during flowering, which begins at the end of April-May and lasts for a couple of months.

A place for a flower bed can be chosen both in the sun and in the shade, the bell is picky about this. But the bell loves good soil: loose, nutritious, light, it will not grow on loamy soil, therefore, in places with such soil, it is necessary to add peat, sand, humus to the future flower bed. Choose a place for planting a flower away from groundwater and lowlands, since the bell does not like stagnant water and in this case the root system rots quite quickly.

The distance between plants when planting should be from 10 to 15 centimeters, one bell can grow in width up to 30 centimeters! Therefore, carefully monitor the area occupied by the bell, it is able to fill the entire area in a short time. This plant requires strict restrictions on the growing area. Propagated by seeds and pieces of rhizomes.

The plant is relatively frost-resistant, but it is advisable to cover it for the winter, since it quickly freezes out in frosty, snowless winters. You can cover with spruce branches, straw and other natural and artificial covering materials.

Heliantemum (sunflower) apennine

Wonderful, unusual, up to 25 centimeters high, a plant that forms volumetric pillows. During the flowering period, which lasts from April to June, it looks mesmerizing: during the day, the open flowers turn after the sun (by the way, that is why the plant was given the second name - sunflower), and in the evening they crumble. But this does not spoil the plant, because in the morning many new buds open, following the sun. Peduncles can be of different colors, depending on the variety: from cream and white to bright red and crimson. Mixed flower beds look especially interesting.

Heliantemum is sun-loving, so when choosing a permanent place of residence for this plant, give preference to an area located in the sun. This flower is completely undemanding to the soil, it grows even on poor and stony soils, which makes it practically irreplaceable on alpine hills.

Propagated by seeds and cuttings. When planted with seeds, flowering occurs only in the second year of the plant's life. The distance between the bushes in the flower bed is 15-20 centimeters. When grafting in May-June, cuttings are cut to 10 cm and planted in a container with a mixture of peat and sand, and covered with a film on top. After the appearance of several true leaves, the plant is ready for transplanting to a flower bed.

Sunflower care is easy, it consists in a fairly abundant watering (but in no case do not fill the plant, it may die because of this!) as needed and mineral fertilizing. After watering, it is advisable to loosen the soil.

After flowering, all flower stalks must be removed, this can provoke repeated flowering. Truth. It will not be as abundant as the first.

After the final flowering, the plant is cut close to the ground. For the winter, it is advisable to cover with any covering material, even natural, even artificial. Although heliantemum is considered a frost-resistant plant, significant temperature changes (typical for the southern parts of our country, for example, the Rostov region) can destroy the plant.
