In the past few years, breeders have worked hard to create hybrid forms of aquilegia. The result was two-color, double, original coloring of inflorescences with large buds. What varieties are popular with gardeners?
Selection direction
As a result of a complex selection of parents, hybrid varieties of the catchment arose that differ from the original source:
• large buds;
• bright, wide range of colors (sometimes two-color);
• terry;
• increased winter hardiness;
• decorativeness throughout the season (undersized varieties form dense, compact leaf clumps);
• excellent adaptability to new growing conditions;
• variability (suitable for any flower bed compositions).
Most of the hybrids are obtained from the crossing of American species with the common aquilegia, characterized by straight, long spurs. European specimens are characterized by curved or ring-shaped spurs. In Sino-Japanese selection, the latter trait is absent.
Insects contribute to the diversity of varieties by freely transferring pollen from one plant to another. In this case, daughter seedlings may have a color different from their parents.
Tall specimens
The Snow Queen … Bushes 55-60 cm high with lush, richly colored greens. In late spring, they are covered with snow-white drooping buds.
Crimson star … Growth reaches 60 cm. The red outer petals reveal a white core, resembling a two-color ice cream with strawberries.
Spring magic … Powerful bushes 65-70 cm in height grow over time to a diameter of 1 m. Large buds 5-6 cm look to the sides. A mixture of colors from pure white to two-tone combination of the main tone with external pink, purple, blue, red petals.
McKana Giant. Growth 80-120 cm. Long-spout buds of two-color form. The white middle goes well with lilac, yellow, blue, purple, burgundy sepals. There are options for a yellow center with a burgundy, red base. Inflorescences look to the sides or up. A bluish bloom of foliage completes the fantastic picture.
Undersized hybrids
Winky Mixed. A dense leaf rosette gives compactness to bushes 25-35 cm tall. The peculiarity of the variety is the upwardly directed open buds of blue, purple, pink, red, white. The stems are thick and strong. Leaves of a juicy green hue.
Biedermeier … Plant height 30-40 cm. The basis is a wild-growing species, improved as a result of complex crosses, gave two-color stunning shades of inflorescences. One bud organically combines: white and blue, yellow and red, purple and blue, blue and white. The drooping bells bloom in early June. The bluish-green foliage is decorative until frost. Resistant to adverse natural factors.
Blackcarent Ice … Compact bushes 25 cm tall. The two-tone color of the buds is original in the performance of a milky yellow center with an inked periphery. Outwardly, it resembles ice cream with blueberries. Differs in reddish stems. Bluish leaf plates turn crimson by autumn.
The listed undersized varieties are great for growing in containers, they will decorate window sills in winter with bright colors.
Terry forms
Ruby Port … The growth of bushes is 60-70 cm. Ruby inflorescences with a yellow center of 4-5 cm resemble miniature dahlias.
Crisp Barlow … Reaches a size of 50-65 cm. Dense double buds resemble painting in the Gzhel technique. An original combination of a violet-lilac base with white dusting along the edge of the petal. One gets the impression that the inflorescences are covered with an openwork layer of frost.
Green Apples … Height 50-65 cm. Greenish-white terry drooping inflorescences 5-7 cm in diameter without spurs outwardly resemble clematis. At first, the buds have a shade of a greenish apple, then they become white-cream with a light green outline of each petal.
The latest innovations in breeding have become available to gardeners due to the rapid multiplication of plants.
