Preparing for the cold: we insulate the country house

The beautiful, warm days were overtaken by the cold autumn too quickly. I think very few people had time to prepare for the fall. But this is not a problem, they say, warm days will return to us. But not for long, so while it's still cold outside, and it's not better in houses, read how to insulate your summer cottage

If your home is not warm enough, then it somehow leaves you.

Window

Uninsulated windows are the worst enemy of heat in the house. If your house has old wooden windows, then it is better to replace them with new metal-plastic ones. But if there is no such possibility, there is also salvation.

You can treat windows and keep warm:

1. Glass-to-window joints can be reinforced with a special sealant or frame putty. If necessary, we change the glazing bead;

2. Replace the glasses if they are cracked. There is no such possibility? Use office tape. How? Stick it on the glass at the crack. But the glass must be dry and not frozen;

3. Paste over with insulation. We glue insulation over the entire frame area. PVC or rubber will do. It is better to do this before the onset of severe frosts;

4. Plug all cracks. An old mattress, or rather cotton wool from it, will come in handy here. If you do not have it, then scraps of batting or foam rubber, old newspapers and other similar materials will be used;

5. Cover all this with paper strips. This should be done after the previous procedures. The strips can be purchased at the store, they are convenient because they have an adhesive layer;

6. Double frames can be better insulated. Place any insulation (for example, cotton wool) between them.

If all of the above methods did not help, then there are two options: the work is done poorly or everything is very bad with the windows. In the second case, we recommend one more method.

We need: plastic wrap (slightly larger than the size of the window) and a furniture stapler (be sure to fill it with staples). The film must be attached to the frame over the entire window area. Ready! This method of insulation will take no more than 15 minutes, but if you have experience and dexterity, then you can cope faster.

The only drawback of such protection is that no air will pass through such a window. That is, you will not only get rid of drafts, but also the ability to open the window when necessary. Yes, and you will not be able to admire the views from the window after such protection either.

Doors

Are the windows insulated, but the heat is still not retained in the house? Check the doors! It is worth noting that both external and interior doors may need insulation. First you need to examine the doors and identify the gaps that form between the door and the frame. Your task is to eliminate these very cracks.

So, if the gaps are small, put the seals. If cold air enters from under the door, then fix a sealing brush in this place (you can buy such a device or make it yourself). And the easiest way to escape the cold is to close the door with a thick curtain.

Roof

Don't forget about the roof. It should be insulated if there is a second residential floor. In other cases, pay attention to the ceiling. You can make the ceiling warmer with foam. But this option is too fast and too budgetary, so we do not recommend getting carried away with this method. Decided to use Styrofoam? Don't skimp on material. Pay attention to the density, the more it is, the better.

In addition, it is better to take polystyrene foam boards with a milled edge. It is convenient to overlap them. And this means - the heat will not go away. But trying to fit ordinary plates to each other … The idea is so-so. The cracks will still remain, the heat will go away, and you will only waste your time and, albeit small, but still funds.

Another budget way to insulate the ceiling is sawdust in the attic. In rural areas, this method may not be costly at all, since there are sawmills, construction parts, where there is a lot of waste from processing. They will be useful to us. This method of insulation is only suitable for those who have no cracks in the roof, and moisture will not get into the sawdust. Otherwise, you will only add to your work, because removing wet sawdust is not a pleasant occupation.

Floor

You can also insulate the floor. To do this, it is necessary to attach foam strips to the skirting boards: one edge should cover part of the wall, and the other part of the floor. And the foil layer should be in the building.

But still, in order for your home to delight you with warmth in winter, pay attention to the walls. But there will be few available tools, and you will have to turn to professionals.
