Over the summer you have done a great job adding a veranda to your summer cottage. But for now, this is still an unheated room, not insulated in order to use the veranda as a living room in winter. In order for a heated, warm veranda to be added to the small country house and it was possible to relax on it with your family on winter weekends, it should be well insulated outside and inside
Where to begin? Insulation outside
While the autumn days are still quite warm, you should insulate the veranda outside, then go on to insulate it inside and after all the insulation work is completed, to the autonomous heating of the room. If you are late with insulating the veranda outside, then at least this year insulate it from the inside, and in the spring or summer following the winter period, you can complete what you started with insulating the veranda outside.
We will assume that you still have one or two weeks to insulate the veranda outside. How can you quickly insulate it from the street side?
In this article, I propose to do the insulation of our extension on our own in order to reduce the cost of repairing the premises. Purchase material such as expanded polystyrene. It perfectly insulates the walls from the outside. And even if you manage to "from the street" before the cold weather just attach it to the walls of the veranda, and decide to decorate it in the spring, then such wall insulation will have a significant effect on keeping the heat inside the room during the heating period.
It is very easy to attach this material to the outer walls of the room. First, the wall must be treated with a protective compound. Next, you need special fasteners - "mushrooms". You can buy them in any construction department, where you buy your insulation material. They are used to attach polystyrene foam plates to the wall. This is followed by a special mesh (consult with hardware stores about layers of finishing materials when using polystyrene foam). Then the final touch is the external decorative wall decoration, for example, with plaster or its various compounds.
There is another option for warming the outer walls, which can be done independently: expanded polystyrene, behind it a vapor barrier film, a siding system. Another type of insulation layers outside is again expanded polystyrene, an insulating film and a block house. That is, the insulating layers outside the building, and indeed inside it, run into the budget that is most acceptable to you. We turn to the insulation of the veranda from the inside.
Insulation of the veranda from the inside
The veranda will have to be insulated from the inside along the entire perimeter, capturing the ceiling, floors, and walls. Otherwise, if one of the sides of the dwelling is not insulated, then the heat will quickly leave it during the heating period.
More accessible and convenient is the frame method of warming the room. This will require a metal or wooden frame. For the manufacture of wood, 50 x 50 mm bars are suitable. And for a metal frame, you will need metal profiles of the appropriate size.
With a tree, of course, it will be easier for a beginner to work with, and even cheaper. It is built around the entire perimeter of the side walls (we recommend starting with them) a wooden frame-lathing. Treat it with a fungicide protectant. It is convenient to insert any insulating material inside such a crate - expanded polystyrene, mineral wool and other insulating materials.
After installing the wooden lathing, insulation boards are inserted into it. Plates of the required size are cut from the total roll and tightly inserted into the grooves of the crate, the material is pressed into them by hand. The next layer is a vapor barrier film along the entire perimeter of the wall with a thickness of up to 7 mm. The film is attached to a wooden crate with construction tape or a construction stapler.
Next, you need to make decorative wall decoration. This can be done using plastic panels, lining, wooden slats. Panels are attached with fasteners that are designed for each individual type of finishing materials.
Now we should move on to insulating the floor on the veranda. Here you will also need a wooden lathing from a bar measuring 50 by 50 mm. Expanded polystyrene or mineral wool will also be needed with a thickness of 50 mm, the thickness of the material will be about 10 mm.
Wooden logs treated with protective compounds against fungus and mold are laid on the floor and fastened to the concrete floor screed with dowels. The lathing should be 50 cm apart. Insulation plates are inserted into the new grooves. Cover the floors with OSB sheets on top. Seams should be treated with a sealant, skirting boards should be laid around the entire perimeter of the room.
And in the end, we just have to insulate the ceiling. Insulation by the proposed method is carried out provided that you have installed a roof with a vapor barrier and waterproofing films and a covering material outside. Here again you need a wooden frame. Styrofoam or mineral wool slabs are placed in it, then the ceiling must be "sewn up" with any suitable finishing material.
And you can heat a small veranda room in an autonomous way, separately from the entire country house. For example, with the help of an electric convector, which is set at a comfortable temperature for you, and it will silently heat your room. Or an infrared heating device - the most modern means of autonomous heating of a separate living space in a house.
