The symbol of valor, glory and victory is unlikely to be grown on a summer cottage in central Russia, but in an apartment in which the central heating system is working properly, this is not difficult to do
Rod Laurus
Since there are never many winners, the genus Laurus is represented in nature by only two plant species. These are evergreen shrubs, or low trees that manage to rise to a height of 2 to 20 meters in their lifetime. The scent of their dark green leathery leaves is familiar to every housewife.
Laurel is a dioecious plant, with a clear division into male and female flowers growing on different bushes. Greenish-yellow small flowers, collected in cluster inflorescences, do not differ in decorativeness, believing that there are enough fragrant leaves from the plant. Fruits come to replace female flowers - burgundy-blackish berries.
Since antiquity (beginning in the 8th century BC), the laurel has been dedicated to the golden-haired god of light, Apollo. Winners of sports games and poets were awarded with a wreath of laurel branches. Nowadays, the winners of numerous competitions, although they do not wear laurel wreaths, are given the title of "Laureate", which literally means "crowned with laurel" in Russian.
Laurel leaves contain essential oils, the aroma of which is preserved when dried. Therefore, dried leaves have been used as a spice for a long time. In Soviet times, when borders were closed, bay leaves were perhaps the main spice in our kitchens. He not only gave aroma to dishes and marinades, but also served as an antiseptic.
Two types of laurel
* Laurel noble (Laurus nobilis) is a shrub that feels great in apartments where the central heating system works well, or in houses with good heating. Leathery leaves with a wavy edge exude a pleasant aroma that sets a person up for feats and awakens a creative streak. Small flowers appear in April.
The varieties are bred, the leaves of which differ from the botanical species. For example, the variety "Wrinkled" is decorated with leaves with a very wavy edge; variety "Golden" flaunts golden yellow leaves; the variety "Ivolistny" or "Narrow-leaved" has narrow and long light green leaves.
* Laurel Canary (Laurus canariensis) or
Laurel azores (Laurus azorica) - more leathery and wider leaves with less wrinkled edges, exuding a weaker aroma compared to Laurel noble.
Growing
Laurel is grown outdoors, planting plants in the spring where the warm climate allows. In areas with severe frosts, it can only be grown as a houseplant, immediately choosing a container size that will make it possible to do without additional transplants.
Laurel bushes easily tolerate pruning, and therefore they arrange neat live hedges from them, or form various figures. If there is no such need, then the plant can not be pruned, enjoying its natural beautiful shape.
Laurel is undemanding to soils, but good drainage is necessary.
The place of residence Laurus loves well-lit, sheltered from the cold wind, but also tolerates partial shade. Indoor specimens in the summer, it is advisable to take out into the open air.
The Azorean laurel is thermophilic and cannot stand even light frosts, while the noble laurel is more tolerant of cold, withstanding a short-term drop in temperature to minus 15 degrees.
Watering is required for pot plants and young seedlings. Adult Laurels of open ground do not need watering.
Reproduction
Propagated by layering (in August), sowing seeds, but the most popular type of reproduction is cuttings. Cuttings are harvested in the spring using annual shoots. They are planted in a mixture of moss and sand and kept under glass. After rooting, they are transplanted into personal pots, growing to two or three years of age, after which they are planted in open ground.
Enemies
May be affected by worms.
