Ratibida columnar (lat. Ratibida columnifera) - a representative of the genus Ratibida of the Asteraceae family, or Compositae. The homeland is considered to be North America. In the same place, the plant can be found in nature. Typical habitats are prairies, wastelands, dry areas, roadsides, abandoned areas. Another name for the columnar ratibide is the Mexican hat. This aspect is due to the appearance of the plant.
Characteristics of culture
Ratibida columnar is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 1 m high, endowed with a rod system, the roots of which are able to penetrate far into the soil. This feature is inherent in all members of the genus. They are all drought-resistant and are able to live for a long time without irrigation, extracting water from the depths through the roots. The foliage of the species under consideration is of medium size, green with a grayish tint, divided into lobes.
The flowers are always bright, with a pronounced central part in the form of a cone, which rises above the petals by 2, and sometimes even 3 centimeters. The petals, in turn, are elongated, oval, hanging down, the color varies from yellow and orange to burgundy, in the latter case, usually with a yellow border. The middle part is usually green or greenish-yellow and hard to the touch.
The fruits are represented by capsules bearing thin elongated seeds that remain viable for 2-3 years. It is worth noting that the seeds sprout amicably and quickly. Moreover, the culture is prone to self-seeding, and abundant. To prevent columnar ratibide from flooding the area, it is important to systematically remove excess copies. By the way, plants that are propagated by sowing seeds bloom only in the second year, with the seedling method and preliminary stratification - in the first year.
Sowing and care features
Sowing seeds of columnar ratibida is carried out in early spring in seedling boxes. With this method, flowering can be achieved from some specimens closer to mid-summer. Before sowing, it is important to subject the seeds to stratification (the optimum temperature for manipulation is 5-7C, time is 30-40 days). Sowing is carried out in seedling boxes filled with neutral nutrient soil. A film is stretched over it, which will speed up the process of pecking the seeds.
As a rule, the seeds of columnar ratibide sprout 10-14 days after sowing. Diving is carried out when at least 2-3 true leaves appear on the plants. It is recommended to dive into separate containers, preferably peat pots, in order to exclude frequent contact with the root system. Before planting, it is important to harden the seedlings, if possible - it is worth moving the containers to a cool place.
Planting of ratibida seedlings columnar in open ground is carried out not earlier than the end of May, when warm weather sets in outside the window and night frosts pass. The optimal distance between plants is 25 cm, preferably 30-35 cm, if you plant the plants too often, pest damage, slow growth, inactive flowering are possible. After planting, the soil is poured abundantly with warm, settled water.
The subsequent care of the plants involves a minimum of manipulation. These are watering as needed (even a prolonged drought will be tolerated by the plants without any problems), weeding and light loosening. Top dressing in the process of growth of the culture is not required, since their introduction provokes a set of green mass, and not abundant flowering. In the spring, it is possible to introduce rotted organic matter and a complex of mineral fertilizers. Once every 4-5 years, the plant is subjected to division and transplantation, because by that time the bushes are thinning and lose their former decorative effect.
