Privet Ybota (lat. Ligustrum ibota) - ornamental shrub; a representative of the genus Privet of the Olive family. Under natural conditions, this species is widespread in Japan, China and Korea. Suitable for cultivation in central Russia, but subject to winter shelter. Like other species of the genus, Ybota privet is attractive and excellent for landscaping gardens and parks. The species was introduced into culture back in 1870.

Characteristics of culture

Privet Ybota is a light-loving and demanding growing deciduous shrub no more than two meters high with a spreading crown. When growing crops in the non-chernozem zone, the shrub does not exceed 1 m. The leaves of the species under consideration are dark green, elongated-ovate, shiny, up to 6-7 cm long. On the back side, the foliage is lighter, with a bluish bloom. The flowers are fragrant, white, small, collected in paniculate inflorescences up to 7 cm long. Ybota privet blooms in the third decade of June to the second decade of July. Non-annual flowering, it also cannot be called plentiful. The fruit is a rounded black drupe, reaches 0.8-1 cm in diameter. Fruits ripen in the third decade of September.

Growing Ybota privet is difficult, since the plant is demanding both in soil composition and location. The place is preferably protected from drafts, wind and direct sunlight, it is better if it is light partial shade. The soil should be fresh, fertile and moist. Heavy, strongly acidic, waterlogged, dry, waterlogged or saline soils are absolutely unsuitable. Privet Ybota is moisture-loving, and one of the most important procedures for caring for it is watering.

They should be regular and abundant, especially during dry periods. The growth rate of the species under consideration is average. Propagated by seeds, layering, cuttings and grafting. Privet Ybota is classified as a thermophilic crop, but despite this, it is able to develop normally in central Russia, but in severe winters the shrubs suffer greatly from frost, and in order to prevent this, it is important to carefully insulate the foot and the bush itself before the onset of stable cold weather …

In general, this type of privet needs systematic care, plant health and growth activity depend on it. In addition to watering, you need to loosen the soil at the foot and remove weeds as necessary. By the way, the second procedure can be excluded if the soil is mulched with organic material. Mulch protect bushes not only from weeds, but also from overheating of the root system and rapid evaporation of moisture. Mulch is advised to be applied in spring, but after warming up the soil. An annual formative pruning is required for the species in question, this procedure will allow the shrubs to be given the necessary shape. Sanitary pruning is a prerequisite for successful cultivation, it is carried out in early spring, the appearance of plants and their decorativeness also depend on it.

Subtleties of reproduction and planting

Among gardeners, two methods of reproduction are most common - seed and cuttings. And in fact, and in another case, you can get healthy and strong plants, which will subsequently delight with their beauty and decorativeness. Seeds for sowing can be purchased at a specialist store or harvested by yourself.

Ybota privet fruits ripen in late September, sometimes in early October. Extraction from the fruits, the seeds are thoroughly washed several times, after which they are sown in the ground under a shelter for the winter. If sowing is planned in spring in seedling boxes, then the seeds are subjected to cold six-month stratification. In the first case, the seeds undergo natural stratification.

The second popular breeding method is cuttings. You can use both summer and winter cuttings as a material. Summer cuttings give the best results, since under all conditions, up to 100% of cuttings are rooted. Cuttings are recommended to be cut from young and developed shoots. The procedure is carried out only after flowering, that is, in mid-July.

Cuttings should be planted for rooting in greenhouses with fertile soil, on top of which a well-moistened layer of washed river sand is laid. The greenhouse can be built using film or glass, these materials will create the necessary humidity and temperature inside the greenhouse, which is very important for cuttings. The glass or film is systematically removed for ventilation. Also, we must not forget about systematic watering. Plants obtained in this way are transplanted to a permanent place in the second - third year.
