Weigela blooming (Latin Weigela florida) - a representative of the Weigela genus of the Honeysuckle family. In nature, this variety can be found in the Primorsky Territory, North China and Japan. One of the most widespread species in Russia. It is widely used in landscape design.
Characteristics of culture
Weigela flowering is represented by deciduous shrubs up to 3 m high. Young shoots are drooping, reddish-brown, with age they acquire a gray color. Leaves are bright green, elliptical, serrate, short-petiolate, pointed at the ends, bare on the outside, and tomentose-pubescent along the veins on the inside.
The flowers are large, tubular, bright pink, dark pink, pale pink, white inside, collected in few-flowered inflorescences, located on short lateral shoots. The fruit is a capsule. Weigela blooms blooming from the third decade of May to the second decade of June, sometimes longer. Re-flowering is likely, usually in late August and lasts about two weeks. The seeds ripen by September-October.

Currently, several garden forms of flowering weigela, differing in the color of foliage or flowers, have been bred. The most common are considered to be:
* Purpurea (purpurea) - a garden form, represented by shrubs up to 1.5 m high with a dense leafy crown. The leaves are red-brown in color, their length varies from 5 to 8 cm. * Nana variegata (nana variegata) is a low-growing, slow-growing shrub with beautiful variegated foliage and crimson or pink flowers, collected in small-flowered inflorescences of 3-4 pieces. The shape is ideal for landscaping rocky gardens.
* Alba (alba) is a shrub up to 3 m high with a wide densely leafy crown. The leaves are elliptical, covered with white specks. The flowers are white or white-pink.
* Sieboldii argenteo-marginata (siebold argenteo-marginata) - shrubs with medium frost-resistant characteristics. It has beautiful foliage with white edging. The flowers are pink. Also of interest in ornamental gardening.
The subtleties of cultivation
Like other representatives of the genus, flowering weigela prefers well-lit places with loose, fertile, drained and slightly acidic soil. Protection from northerly winds is a must. In semi-shaded areas, plants with variegated foliage lose their decorative effect. In the conditions of the Moscow Region and nearby regions, shrubs need shelter with spruce branches, but often they freeze even with careful wrapping. With the onset of warmth, the plants quickly recover and bloom in the middle of summer.
In dry periods, flowering weigela requires abundant watering. Plants respond positively to feeding. During the season, it is necessary to carry out two dressings: the first - in early spring, the second - in the phase of flower formation. Sanitary pruning is carried out annually, forming - once every three years immediately after flowering. The culture is propagated by seeds and cuttings. Garden forms of flowering weigels are propagated only by cuttings. Saplings are planted in the spring. The optimal distance between shrubs is 3 m, when forming a hedge - 1.5 m.
Application
