African cherry orange (lat. Citropsis schweinfurthii) - a fruit tree belonging to the richest family Rutovye.
Description
The African cherry orange is a relatively small woody plant covered with sharp thorns. Juicy edible fruits used by the local population ripen on these trees. All fruits, covered with a rather dense orange peel, have an elliptical or spherical shape, and their diameter reaches seven centimeters. Inside the dark juicy pulp there are several large white seeds, and the taste of these fruits is very reminiscent of tangerines.
Where grows
The African cherry orange grows in a rather limited area, mainly in Central African and West African countries (in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as in Uganda and Sudan).
And since this crop cannot boast of a high yield, it is not grown on an agricultural scale due to its inexpediency. Therefore, the vast majority of the inhabitants of the planet have never heard of such a plant. Moreover, the African cherry orange as a biological species is listed in the Red Book, as it is on the verge of extinction.
Application
This fruit can be eaten fresh, as well as used for making jams, compotes and other equally interesting and tasty dishes. They are used to prepare a wide variety of culinary delights and the crust of these fruits. In addition, the African cherry orange is used as one of the most important components in the manufacture of various medicines.
The fruits of this very original culture are very rich in all kinds of vitamins and valuable microelements and perfectly quench thirst. They are actively used to cure such unpleasant conditions as sunstroke or heatstroke, as well as colds and fevers.
And the local population (especially the Ugandans) of those countries where this culture grows, considers its fruits to be a powerful aphrodisiac. True, this fact has not yet received scientific confirmation.
Contraindications
Just like almost all other citrus fruits, African cherry orange is a fairly strong allergen, and this must be taken into account by everyone who wants to enjoy this unusual fruit.
Growing and caring
The African cherry orange is incredibly thermophilic, so when the thermometer drops below the plus one or two degrees, it almost always dies.
