Clivia will fall in love with both lovers of indoor plants and lovers of garden flowers - this representative of the amaryllis family has both decorative garden and home forms. In indoor culture, clivia pleases its owners with bright flowering twice a year: from January to April and in July-August

Unusual structure of a tropical flower

Clivia came to our homes from the west coast of South Africa, and is also found in the wild in the rainforests of Southeast Africa. She is not too pretentious about the care and conditions of detention.

It is a perennial plant. It has belt-like saturated green leaves that fit tightly to the peduncle, alternately clasping each other. In clivia, a very unusual shape is formed due to the fact that the leaves grow in two opposite rows, forming a wide-open fan.

The peduncle reaches a height of medium size - about 20-30 cm, and has a flattened shape with ribbed sides. 12-26 buds appear on it, collected by an umbrella in inflorescences, the diameter of which sometimes reaches 20 cm. The flowers consist of six petals and long stamens. The color of the clivia petals is of different colors: white, yellow, pink, red lead, with a contrasting center, spotted, with a white or green border around the edge. The flowers bloom gradually, so the flowering period is extended for a long time.

Features of the reproduction of clivia at home

One of the interesting features of the plant is that several peduncles can appear on it at once. With artificial pollination, large fruits are formed on it, in which the seeds soon ripen. They can be used for reproduction in indoor conditions, but it must be borne in mind that such clivias will be able to lay buds and bloom only after a few years, but not in the next 2-3 years.

In addition, clivia can be propagated vegetatively. To do this, in the process of transplantation, the offspring, which already have their own young roots, are carefully separated from the mother plant. From a plant planted in this way, flowering can be expected after 2 years.

Conditions for the care and maintenance of clivia

Clivia is famous for her unpretentious nature to the conditions of detention. She is not demanding on lighting, not capricious with regard to room temperature. Despite the fact that this is a plant from hot latitudes, it does not need excessively warm conditions. In the winter months, she feels equally well in a cool room, where the thermometer stays at about + 8 … + 10 ° C, and in a well-heated room with air dry from the operation of radiators.

Clivia is suitable for moderate soil moisture. During the growing season, up to 10 young leaves can form on the plant. As soon as a flower arrow appears in the pot, watering is immediately stopped. From this point on, the plant should be kept in a warm room.

The transplant is performed after the clivia has faded. For this, a substrate is prepared from the following ingredients:

• turf land - 4 parts;

• deciduous land - 2 parts;

• sand - 1 part.

Half of the sod land can be replaced with peat and humus in equal parts. The frequency of transplants depends on the age of the clivia. For a young flower up to 5 years of age, this procedure is carried out annually, in the future it is performed less often.

It is worth noting that clivia belongs to long-lived plants and may well delight the owners with its presence for decades. Another feature of clivia is that it is very sensitive to both touch and permutation. It is better not to transfer it often from one window to another, but to set aside some permanent place for the plant, and change it only if absolutely necessary, for example, to stimulate flowering, when the conditions in her room are inappropriate for this.
