Fan-shaped aquilegia (Latin Aquilegia flabellata) - a flowering plant belonging to the genus Aquilegia, adjacent to the numerous Buttercup family. Another name is Akita aquilegia (Latin Aquilegia akitensis). Quite an extensive view, includes a huge number of forms and varieties that are popular among flower growers and gardeners who want to contemplate bright and rich colors on their sites.
Area
In nature, the species under consideration lives in the northern regions of Japan, on the Kuril Islands, as well as on the territory of Sakhalin. He chooses mountainous areas, forest zones, rocks, meadows, less often pebbles and sea shores, which predominate in the territories of natural habitats. The habitats of the aquilegia fan-shaped, or Akita, are always sunny or semi-shaded with diffused light; in the shade, plants develop slowly and practically do not bloom. The species blooms especially abundantly on gravelly and light areas. Cultivated varieties are actively cultivated in European countries, Russia, Japan and other countries with warm climates.
Characteristics of culture
Fan-shaped aquilegia is represented by plants reaching a height of 70 cm; there are also low-growing varieties that do not exceed 15 cm in height. The species has a triple foliage equipped with long petioles and collected in a lush basal rosette. Flowers with a diameter of up to 7 cm, unique in structure, rise above the rosettes of leaves. They can have a wide variety of colors (depending on belonging to the variety), but the main species is in lilac-blue shades with white spurs curved at the tips, which give the flowers a special appeal and inimitability that beckons gardeners to cultivate crops on their site.
The fan-shaped aquilegia bloom is observed in the second decade of May. Flowering lasts about 3 weeks, sometimes less, which depends entirely on climatic conditions and the regularity of care. The fruits of the species under consideration are formed in large quantities, ripening occurs in early - mid-July. Even after flowering, the plant looks very attractive, because the foliage does not dry out after the onset of the fruiting phase, but pleases with a rich color until late autumn. As already mentioned, fan-shaped aquilegia is distinguished by a variety of forms and varieties, in this it can easily compete with its relative - ordinary aquilegia, and it is in no way inferior to hybrid aquilegia.
Forms and varieties of the species
People who are fond of gardening and floriculture will love the form called Nana Alba. This form is characterized by small compact bushes about 50-60 cm high with bluish-green relatively large foliage and medium white flowers. The form is widespread, used to decorate borders and garden paths, and is excellent as an ampel plant (suitable for growing in garden containers and flowerpots).
It is impossible not to mention a group of varieties called "Cameo". The varieties included in the series are very attractive and unusual, most often represented by small bushes up to 35 cm high with small bluish, white, pinkish and reddish-white flowers. All varieties are distinguished by early flowering, which makes this group a popular one. Indeed, in the spring, after a long and cold winter, everyone wants to see bright and at the same time fragile creatures on their site that will turn the garden into a real heavenly kingdom.
Care features
In general, caring for a fan-shaped aquilegia cannot be called difficult, because it belongs to the category of unpretentious plants. The culture needs standard operations that are applicable to most flowers. Regular weeding, watering and loosening are the main procedures that allow plants to exist and please with abundant flowering. It should be noted that the fan-shaped aquilegia is drought-resistant, and all thanks to the powerful root system. Of course, the culture has a positive attitude towards watering, but it will also endure a short drought without any problems.
Do not forget about top dressing, without them aquilegia bloom weaker. During the season, two dressings are enough: the first with organic matter and mineral fertilizers, the second - only with mineral fertilizers. Loosening is not recommended, it should be done after watering or after rain. Immediately after flowering, the fan-shaped aquilegia flower stalks are pruned, otherwise they will spoil the appearance of the flower garden. And why self-seeding? In fact, after the seeds ripen, the plants actively self-sow, which can lead to the crossing of different species and varieties, as a result, the next year the flower bed will not please with what the gardener expected from it.
