Ammi large (Latin Ammi majus) - a herbaceous unpretentious plant of the genus Ammi (Latin Ammi), belonging to the Umbrella family (Latin Apiaceae). The native land of the plant is North Africa, where it grows in semi-desert conditions, and therefore belongs to drought-resistant plants, for which the hot sun and hot wind do not pose a threat to life. In Russia, Ammi can be found on the slopes of the Crimean Quests and the Caucasus Mountains. The external appearance of the plant is very similar to the related in the family Umbrella plants of the genus Hogweed (Latin Heracleum). But, if a number of species of the Hogweed genus pose a threat to human skin, then Ammi is a large healer for some skin diseases.

What's in your name

Ammi large has acquired many popular names, which celebrate its picturesque appearance, as well as a number of life qualities. For its elegant snow-white inflorescences, the plant is called "Women's Lace" or "Queen Anne's Lace", or even simply "Lace Plant". And for its ability to grow quickly, Ammi is called the "Bishop's Weed" or "The False Bishop's Weed."

Description

Ammi large is an annual or biennial plant with pinnately-divided fern-like leaves and large umbellate inflorescences of small creamy white flowers. The plant is drought-resistant, requiring a well-drained soil without special claims on its structural composition.

The underground part of the plant is the taproot, surrounded by adventitious roots, which gives life to the plant and nourishes

A rather powerful root gives rise to an erect branching stem, from half a meter to one meter high. The surface of the stem is bare, furrowed.

The picturesque cut leaves look like green lace, and each miniature wedge is decorated with denticles along the edge of the leaf.

Spectacular large inflorescences, representing the structure of a complex umbrella, formed by numerous miniature flowers with five creamy white petals and located on long peduncles, which makes them attractive for cutting.

The fruits of the plant are also very attractive, which are numerous cropped fruits, compressed from the sides and consisting of two lobes.

Healing abilities

The healing abilities of Ammi are large due to active natural substances contained in all parts of the plant called furanocoumarins (or furocoumarins). This is a number of oxygen-containing compounds that act in different ways on human skin. Some of them cause skin diseases, such as those found in the juice of Hogweed and wild Parsnip, while others, as in Ammi large, are healers for skin diseases such as psoriasis, vitiligo and fungal mycosis.

Such healing abilities of Ammi great were known in ancient Egypt, and in India, for example, the plant is cultivated for its medicinal qualities.

Ideal flower garden element

The delicacy and lightness of the appearance of "Ammi Big" is ideal for creating a mixborder background, emphasizing the beauty and picturesqueness of other flowering plants. The plant will look great next to the same unpretentious creatures of nature, like bright blue Cornflowers, scarlet Poppies, or multi-colored Dahlias.

The plant can be used as a decorator to hide a compost heap, a rickety fence, or unsightly walls in outbuildings.

Long peduncles, openwork white inflorescences are attractive for cutting into bouquets, which can be either uniform or emphasizing the brightness of other components of the bouquet. Flowers are able to maintain freshness and attractiveness in bouquets throughout the working week, until the next trip to the country, when you can "make" a new bouquet.
