A lot has been said about the benefits of grapefruit. This most valuable medical and dietary product is loved by both children and adults alike. It is low in calories, very rich in vitamins and is able to cure a whole string of a wide variety of ailments. And grapefruit is also good because, in comparison with other citrus fellows, it has the longest shelf life. Moreover, it can be stored equally well both in the refrigerator and at room temperature
How to choose?
Choosing grapefruits, they need to be weighed "by eye". If in reality the fruits are heavier than in appearance, then they are very juicy. Large grapefruits are considered the best in quality.
A quality fruit must be shiny and clean, and its skin must not have absolutely any damage or rotten areas.
The color of these beneficial citrus fruits is also noteworthy: fruits with pinkish pulp and red skin are usually sweeter and less bitter.
How to store?
Room temperature will be the most optimal for storing juicy grapefruits - under these conditions they will not lose their freshness for four to five days. And if you put these wonderful citrus fruits in the refrigerator, they will not lose their great taste within three weeks. The main thing is to place them in the fruit compartment. By the way, it makes sense to send only ripe fruits to the refrigerator: unripe citrus fruits will simply not be able to ripen in the cold, and overripe fruits will quickly deteriorate there.
To extend the shelf life of grapefruits, it doesn't hurt to wrap each fruit in paper. When wrapped in it, these fruits easily retain their freshness from thirty days to several months (more exact dates are in direct proportion to their degree of ripeness).
As a rule, at temperatures up to five degrees, juicy fruits remain for several months; if the thermometer shows from five to ten degrees, then grapefruits will lie perfectly for about ten to twelve days; and at a temperature of more than ten degrees, the duration of their storage usually does not exceed ten days.
However, grapefruits can be frozen. And so that they do not lose their juiciness, before they are sent to the freezer, they are disassembled into pieces and put in polyethylene bags. But keeping fresh fruits in polyethylene is categorically not recommended - they perceive oxygen deficiency very badly.
As for peeled grapefruits, they can be stored for no more than one or two days. The refrigerator is able to extend this period by a maximum of twenty-four hours. If a grapefruit without a skin lasts longer, then it will lose both its external attractiveness and juiciness - its pulp will irrevocably lose its excellent taste and become very lethargic and unsightly.
Useful Tips
In close contact with any other fruits, grapefruits should be stored especially carefully - in case of contact of the grapefruit peel with overripe fruits, the shelf life of these healthy citrus fruits can be significantly reduced.
So that during storage the grapefruit peel does not become wrinkled, and the fruits themselves do not dry out, it is recommended to rub the surface of the peel with vegetable oil. By the way, this method works great for all citrus fruits.
It's no secret that grapefruits are incredibly sensitive to temperature changes. Therefore, if the purchased juicy fruits were immediately sent to the refrigerator, then it is better to leave them there until the moment of consumption. And if grapefruits have been stored at room temperature for several days, then there is no need to send them further to the refrigerator either. By the way, in both cases, their shelf life will be approximately the same.
