Kiwi is a great overseas fruit that instantly gained popularity in our latitudes. Indeed, kiwis are so tasty and healthy! By the way, these wonderful fruits are biologically berries, and they got their interesting name in honor of the funny New Zealand kiwi bird. Kiwi is a real storehouse of vitamins, including the vital vitamin C, which is why these wonderful tropical fruits appear on our tables more and more often. Does everyone know how to store them correctly?
How to choose?
When choosing kiwi, first of all, you should pay attention to the degree of their softness. All fruits should be moderately soft, and slight indentations should form when pressed lightly. As a rule, excessive softness of kiwi indicates that the fruits are spoiled, and excessive hardness is evidence that the fruits are most likely not ripe.
Quality kiwis are distinguished by a soft and rather pleasant fruity aroma. And the unique taste of these amazing overseas fruits makes it possible to feel a slight aftertaste of strawberries, gooseberries or melons. In addition, fresh fruits should in no case have a fermentation odor or a pronounced wine odor.
Also, when choosing a kiwi, you must carefully examine each fruit. The hairs on quality fruit should be quite tough, but they should also peel off fairly easily. And dark spots on fruits are signs of various diseases - such fruits are definitely not worth purchasing.
There should be no wet areas in the places where the stalks are attached, and even when you press them, moisture should not be released. If even one drop of moisture appears, this indicates that the kiwis were damaged during storage or transportation, or, even worse, that they simply deteriorated.
How to store?
It is necessary to store kiwi at fairly low temperatures, but the thermometer should not drop below zero degrees. Observing the recommended temperature regime, you can store kiwi in the refrigerator. In this case, exotic fruits can last a month or even more. And the most suitable for storage are considered to be quite firm kiwi.
All fruits sent for storage must be placed in containers equipped with small ventilation holes. If there are no suitable plastic containers, it is quite possible to use ordinary bags with holes made in them. If no air is supplied to the kiwi, the fruits will begin to become covered with an unpleasant fluffy bloom and quickly rot.
In addition, it is advisable to keep kiwi isolated from any aromatic food - these exotic fruits perfectly absorb any extraneous odors.
You can store kiwi in frozen form, but it is better to freeze these useful fruits not whole, but in pieces: fruits intended for freezing are peeled, cut into small rings or cubes, placed in polyethylene or in containers and sent to the freezer.
As for unripe fruits, it is recommended to store them at room temperature - this will allow them to gradually ripen and become softer.
By the way, throughout the entire storage period, the amount of vitamin C in nutritious kiwi is almost completely preserved. This preservation is ensured by the special acids contained in the fruits, as well as the reliable peel of the fruit.
Useful Tips
Best of all, kiwis will be stored at an air humidity of 90 - 95% - in this case, they will fully retain their excellent taste.
Many hostesses are wondering whether it is worth washing the kiwi before sending them for storage. It is advisable to wash these fruits only before storing them in the freezer, and in all other cases there is no need to do this - if you store the washed fruits in the refrigerator or at room temperature, they will deteriorate much faster.
To speed up the process of ripening healthy overseas fruits, you can resort to using apples - if you put kiwi in one paper bag with apples, they will ripen in just a couple of days.
