In the design of artificial reservoirs and ponds, even the most unusual garden accessories in the form of plastic and porcelain figurines of animals and birds cannot compete with their main decoration - the beauties of the nymphs, or, as they are also called, water lilies. But not every water lily is capable of becoming such a decoration, because a lot depends not only on the size and shape of the reservoir, but also on the variety of the chosen plant
If we talk about dwarf varieties, then such water lilies will ideally fit into mini-ponds and large containers replacing them, built into the ground or located on its surface. Tall forms will look harmonious only on large bodies of water, the area of which is at least 10-12 square meters. In shallow water, such nymphs will look very strange, since over time they are able to form dense thickets, covering most of the reservoir with their leaves.
Modern nurseries present on the market a wide range of aquatic plants, including water lilies. That's just over the creation of cold-resistant varieties, breeders are still struggling to no avail. But to the delight of the owners of personal plots, magnificent varieties were bred, delighting not only with beautiful flowering, but also with rich and bright colors.
The varieties of pink, white and red water lilies are especially popular among Russian gardeners: Erhard Oldehoff, Sulfurea, Hazorea White Dagan and Karin von Wehrberg. New products have also appeared in the horticultural field, which are presented in a limited number, but some of them are already sold on the Western European market. These include water lilies, which have the property of repeatedly changing color throughout the growing season, for example, varieties "Berthold" and "Clyde Ikinsl".
Growing conditions
Water lily is a thermophilic plant, prefers well-lit bodies of water with stagnant or slowly flowing waters. There are forms that easily grow and develop in shaded areas, but they do not differ in abundant flowering. Negatively water lilies relate to thickening, therefore, regardless of the type of water lilies, the plants should be provided with the maximum free area. The optimum temperature of the content is 20-25C.
About reproduction and planting
Water lilies are propagated both by seed and by segments of rhizomes. Before sowing, the seeds are soaked in warm water, after which they are sown in special non-degradable containers, which are subsequently placed in water, or directly into the ground at the bottom of the reservoir. Sowing of water lilies is carried out in early June, in the southern regions - at the end of May, but only after the threat of frost has passed.
When plants are propagated by segments of rhizomes, the planting material is placed immediately after cutting on the bottom of the reservoir or kept in a wet state for several days. The planting of the segments is carried out in containers strictly in a horizontal position, sprinkled on top with garden soil and lowered into the water. To begin with, it is advisable to place the planted segments on the shallowest part of the reservoir, and as they grow, move them to a larger one.
About leaving
Water lily is an undemanding culture, it responds positively to fertilizing with mineral granular fertilizers. For the winter, plants need shelter; peat, fallen leaves or sawdust are ideal for this purpose. Many gardeners do not take risks, and until spring they keep plants in cellars, basements or indoor aquariums.

A Little About Preparing Seeds For Sowing
It's a shame when work is invested in the seedlings and the future harvest, and suddenly the plants begin to hurt and die. The fact is that an outwardly healthy grain can be initially infected with a disease. And in order to protect the crop from being damaged by bacterial, viral and fungal ailments that are transmitted through seeds, before sowing, you need to take time to disinfect them
