The tissue will begin to soften, acquire a brownish color, and the roots themselves will be able to completely rot.
When root crops are affected, it is recommended to carry out a whole range of different activities. First of all, the norms of correct crop rotation should be observed: celery can be returned to its original place only after three to four years. An exception will be those crops that can get sick with white and gray rot. These crops include cucumbers, tomatoes and cabbage. It is very important to select only healthy fruits for storage. You should also carry out thermal disinfection of seeds for half an hour at high temperatures. Plants in the second year should be sprayed with one percent Bordeaux liquid. This should be done even when only the first signs of this disease are visible. It is recommended to store root crops at a temperature of no more than plus two degrees, while the air humidity should be at least eighty percent.
Celery scab is another very important celery disease. This disease attacks plants, most often in cold and humid periods. Brown spots become visible on the roots, and the skin begins to crack. As for the methods of combating such a disease, then crop rotation should be observed and celery should be planted in its original place only after a certain number of years.
Peronosporosis - this disease is most often known as downy mildew. This disease attacks the leaves. On the upper side of the leaves, chlorotic specks first become noticeable, and over time they turn into light yellow spots that become oily. Subsequently, these spots will acquire a brown color, and a grayish-purple bloom will appear on the underside. Seed disinfection should be performed, which will require heating the seeds in hot water for twenty minutes at high temperatures. After such an event, it is necessary to lower the seeds in cold water for a few minutes, then they must be thoroughly dried. In the event that you grow seedlings in greenhouses or greenhouses, you should ventilate these rooms from time to time.
As soon as the first symptoms of this disease become noticeable, the seedlings should be sprayed with copper oxychloride at the rate of 0.4 percent suspension or forty grams per ten liters of water. Spraying with Bordeaux liquid is also suitable: at the rate of one hundred grams of copper sulfate and one hundred grams of lime per ten liters of water. In addition, before planting in the ground, plants need to be fertilized with ammonium nitrate.
There is also such a disease as rust. This disease becomes noticeable already at the beginning of summer: red-brown pads appear on the plant. Then the color will change to light brown. Actually, such a disease may persist into the next season. Carriers of the disease have the ability to spend the winter on plant debris. In order to avoid the appearance of such a disease, the norms of crop rotation should be strictly observed. Seeds can only be harvested from completely healthy plants. Warming the seeds in the same way as described above is also suitable. Among other things, the soil should be loosened and weeds removed in a timely manner.
