The lower part of the building perimeter, which is a continuation of the foundation, is called the plinth. There are different types: sunken, flush, protruding. The main purpose is to protect walls from dirt, damage, moisture. The plinth is considered an important element of home design and is always decorated. The decoration is simple in execution and is available to any owner, even without experience in construction. Read about how to choose material and perform work in this article

Varieties and features of the basement finish

Any base must be waterproofed. If your house stands on poles, then between them it is better to make a monolith of brick, concrete. To make the house look decent, you can use various decorative materials.

Clinker tiles

If the basement does not protrude beyond the dimensions of the wall, you can use a budget option - to overlay it with clinker tiles, which are outwardly difficult to distinguish from natural brick. The material has a thickness of 1-2 cm, it is applied on a special adhesive base. For ease of installation, there are sections for closing corners on sale. This finish is moisture-resistant, frost-resistant, does not require any additional treatments.

Finishing made of polymer sandy materials

Composite material in the form of polymer tiles is a "young product" of the Russian construction market, and has recently become popular for finishing facades and foundations. Practically weightless, has no effect on the supporting structure. It allows you to embody any design ideas, as it has a wide selection of colors and looks different: imitates wild stone, brickwork, cobblestone, perfectly decorates the house. Suitable for any climate, impervious to moisture, frost-resistant, durable. Fastened with screws to the lathing or directly to the surface.

Polymer resin tiles

Imitation of bricks of different shades in the form of thin plates (3 mm), with dimensions 36 (24) * 5, 2 (7, 1) cm - this is quick installation and good decor, as well as a low price. The material bends, is cut with scissors, which is especially pleasing for beginners. Fastening takes place with glue to any surface, including insulation. The resins included in the composition provide endurance to temperature contrasts, impart moisture-repellent qualities. Fastened to the adhesive, starting from the corner of the foundation. During the drying process (2-3 days) it requires protection from rain and moisture.

PVC panels for base / plinth finishing

PVC panels are the most popular material for summer residents. They look like mosaic plaster or brickwork, sizes are different: up to 120 cm in length, with a width of 18 cm. Such products with the introduction of particles of natural stone in the form of chips are especially appreciated.

For fixing the panels, it is required to install a lathing, to which the material is mounted with screws. Installation does not cause any problems, as the panels are equipped on the sides with protrusions that fit together like puzzles. Such a coating serves as an effective waterproofing of the foundation.

Plaster

The easiest and cheapest way is plaster. A perfectly flat base is cleaned, primed, using a mineral-based reinforcing mass. Often part of the foundation has geometric deviations and irregularities, in such cases, a reinforcing mesh (fiberglass, braid, fabric) is pre-installed - this will eliminate further cracking and increase the service life. Next, a layer of plaster is applied, the decorative look is achieved by creating a certain relief in the form of prints, roughness, joining. For this, special booms and rollers are used. After drying, any facade paint is applied.

Mosaic plaster

Mosaic differs from the usual plastered surface in a more interesting look. It contains colored stone chips (1-3 mm), creating an overflow effect. Due to the presence of resinous substances, a lot of advantages appear: it does not allow moisture to pass through, does not create steam in the underground, perfectly retains heat, and is resistant to mechanical damage.

Mixes are sold dry and ready-made. In the work, it is necessary to maintain a certain layer thickness, which will exceed the size of the stone inclusions. The application technique is reduced to uniform smoothing in compliance with the selected direction. In the first days, it is necessary to ensure gradual drying, with the installation of protection from the sun and moisture.

Stone tiles

Stone tiles are considered to be a quality and durable material. The basement in such a vestment will look beautiful and solid, the house will take on a rich look. The high price is due to the production of cutting plates from granite, marble, limestone and sandstone will be a cheaper option. The size can be chosen from the proportions of a standard brick, to a board that completely covers the height of the plinth. The texture varies from polished-polished to grainy.

Installation does not cause problems - it is attached to stone glue, the seams are sealed with a special compound. Porous limestone and sandstone slabs are subject to additional treatment with water-repellent compounds. For a protruding foundation, the erection of cornices is required.
