It seems that this plant has always grown in our area. I remember him from early childhood, when we “cooked” dinners for dolls from his miniature flower heads. But, it grew nameless and was not at all associated with an elegant Chamomile. It was worth taking a closer look at the plant, as it turned out to be a real representative of the Chamomile genus. Only the Almighty deprived him of its inflorescence-baskets, typical for the Astrov family, of white petals, misleading people far from the intricacies of botanical science, and forcing botanists to add the specific epithet - "tongueless" to the name of the plant "Chamomile".

It turned out that the birthplace of tongueless Chamomile was the Atlantic coast of North America, from where she successfully moved to other continents. Tongue chamomile has become one of the most surprisingly hardy weeds, not afraid of road dust, restless feet of earthly creatures, walking with pleasure on soft, delicate and fragrant natural rugs. Fragrant chamomile does not pretend to soil fertility, does not need watering. She successfully pleases the attentive traveler, settling on all kinds of wastelands, paths, roadsides of dusty roads, growing in the cracks of the city asphalt.

Plant of many names

Unpretentious tongueless Chamomile for a long time "led by the nose" meticulous botanists, not wanting to determine the place in the classification of the plant world. Different botanists ranked the plant in different genera, giving it a name corresponding to this genus. Therefore, in the literature you can find a variety of Latin names.

The plant is also rich in folk names. If the Russians paid more attention to the absence of white petals and the pleasant aroma of Chamomile, giving it such specific epithets as "tongueless", "green", "fragrant", "fragrant", then among the English-speaking peoples the shape of the flower head of Chamomile was associated with the shape of the pineapple fruit … This gave birth to such names for Chamomile as: "Pineapple Lily" ("Pineapple Lily"), "Pineapple Mint" ("Pineapple mint") "Pineapple Sage" ("Pineapple sage"). Fragrant chamomile is an annual, undersized plant that does not tend to break away from the surface of the earth, creating soft, picturesque rugs. In the most favorable conditions, the height of the plant can reach thirty to forty centimeters. Fern-like foliage is similar to carrot foliage and is miniature in size. Each branch, decorated with delicate foliage, ends with a flower head that resembles a miniature yellow-green pineapple. A pleasant, delicate aroma comes from a dense, lively pineapple weed rug, dark green and flexible. The aroma becomes more intense if you rub the leaves or inflorescence of Chamomile with your fingers.

In the world of weeds, Tongue chamomile is not an important pest of gardens and vegetable gardens. Its roots are located close to the surface of the earth and are easily pulled out with a light jerk. The plant is useful and environmentally beneficial, draping barren earth bald patches with its rugs.

Usage

Of course, the dusty plants on the side of the roads are not appetizing at all. But, Fragrant Chamomile growing in a clean place is quite suitable for a meal. Moreover, although the leaves of the plant are edible, young pineapple inflorescences are better suited for eating or as tea leaves.

Young inflorescences are actively used by traditional healers, preparing tinctures and decoctions from them that have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.
