Many flowers planted in autumn thrive and bloom better. Get acquainted with the rules, terms of work, types of annuals and perennials that need to be sown, divided, transplanted in the fall
Autumn sowing and transplanting rules
It will not be possible to plant and sow all flower crops in one weekend. Each plant has its own term. Consider the types of work by month.
Planting flowers in September
In the first half of the month, phlox, astilbe, goldenrod / solidago, rudbeckia are transplanted and propagated by division. Seedlings / delenki of host, daylilies, irises, brunner, astilbe, lupine are planted. Propagated by cuttings of roses, periwinkle. By the end of the warm season, the seedlings have time to adapt and winter well.
In early September, small-bulbous are planted: muscari, chionodox, crocuses, pushkinia. In the second decade of September, it is the turn of daffodils and tulips; in the last week of the month, hyacinths and lilies are planted.
Failure to comply with the terms leads to improper development of the root system and death during wintering. A rule of thumb helps to choose the correct depth for planting the bulbs: deepen 3 head diameters. If the size is 3 cm, then the embedment depth is 9 cm.
The second half of September is suitable for dividing aquilegia bushes, rudbeckia, paniculate phlox. A popular omen - massive leaf fall - helps to determine the optimal time for planting flowers in autumn. Everything planted at this time will have time to take root.
Planting flowers in October
In the first decade of October, the planting of all the above flowers continues, including tulips, sternbergia, hyacinths, and crocus. The deepening of baby tulips depends on the size (multiply the diameter by 3), adult bulbs by 15-18 cm. The bottom of hyacinths should go into the ground to a depth of 17-18, crocuses by 8-10, lilies by 5-7. In mid-October, you can plant / share peonies, lilies of the valley.
Planting flowers in November
If the temperature is above +5, you can take a chance and plant tulips in the first days of the month. The bulbs quickly give roots, in the absence of frost, they will have time to take root within x weeks.
Sowing flowers in autumn
In autumn, flowers are sown that reproduce by self-sowing: mallow / stem rose, petunia, carnation, ageratum, primrose, aquilegia, etc. Stratification is required for germination of the seeds of these plants. In nature, this is a natural process of reproduction - when the seed is cooled, the vital forces of the seed are activated, in the spring there are strong shoots that are resistant to diseases and pests.
Autumn sowing is relevant for lavender, alyssum, cosmea, escholzia, gypsophila, calendula, lavater, godetia, cornflower, iberis, nigella. In the fall, you can sow chrysanthemums, asters.
Podzimny sowing is best done during the period when cool weather sets in: late October - early November. Work can take place after the first snow falls. The seedling bed is prepared in advance, before the soil freezes. You need to know that germination after wintering decreases and you need to sow thicker.
Pros and cons of autumn sowing
First, I will list the advantages of the winter method:
• seeds that survived frosts undergo natural stratification, give stronger seedlings, which are less sick;
• in the spring there is more time for work in the vegetable garden / garden;
• seeds independently choose the moment for germination, and suffer less from night frosts;
• sprouts appear 1-3 weeks earlier than spring crops.
Autumn planting has disadvantages: low seed germination, the likelihood of seedlings freezing.
Tips for florists
After the autumn transplant, do not water with growth stimulants. The seedling, the cut, the bulb must remain dormant. The flower garden after planting the bulbs must be well shed so that there are no voids or air pockets in the ground.
Planting bulbs is based on the cyclical development (the interval between flowering and planting). In the northern regions, autumn work is carried out selectively, at an earlier date, or postponed to spring.
