This wonderful plant is relatively young, we learned about it about 250 years ago. Since then, it has settled in many gardens and vegetable gardens, decorating them with its elegant heart-shaped flowers and cute pinkish flowers. Are you not familiar with bergenia (badan) yet? We invite you to learn about some of the properties of this wonderful garden flower

In honor of the German botanist

Unfortunately, the exact date of the discovery of this plant has not been preserved, but there is a postmark dating back to 1760. It was then that a package came to Karl Linnaeus from Catherine II, after which botanists officially recognized this flower. Interestingly, the plant has two names that are equally common. In our country, most people call it badan, but in Europe it is called bergenia. It is believed that the second name appeared in honor of the famous botanist Karl

August Bergen.

In fact, this is a primordially Russian plant, because its habitat covers part of the Far East and Siberia. It is less common in Central Asia and Afghanistan. Occasionally you can find bergenia in the Himalayas, the steppes of Mongolia and in China.

The most famous species

The most numerous are only three species of this plant. Herbal perennial or thick-leaved bergenia. Its height often exceeds 60 cm. This species loves northern and shaded slopes, river banks and reservoirs, rock crevices, and scree. Getting out into an open area, it grows rather quickly and occupies very large territories. Badan thick-leaved is the most common type among badans.

Badan heart-leaved is distinguished by beautiful, heart-shaped and more rounded leaves. By the way, it is very similar to the third type of plant called the Pacific incense. The latter often reaches a height of 50 cm. Its inflorescences consist of simple flowers, most often pink. They bloom in May for just a few days.

Hardy, but with claims

Bergenia is a very adaptable plant. It is not demanding on light, soil and heat. However, if you want to get a beautiful culture, then you still have to follow some rules. The ideal soil for good berry growth should be nutritious, moisture-permeable and with neutral acidity.

This plant often settles near water bodies, but at the same time, it does not tolerate stagnant moisture. Thus, if you want to plant bergenia on the shores of an artificial lake, then most likely you cannot do without good drainage. But along with this, badan often suffers from a lack of moisture. If there has been no rain all week, then get ready that on the weekend you will have to make up for the lack of moisture in the soil. In addition, it is advisable to mulch the soil with humus and peat so that the life-giving moisture does not evaporate in the heat.

If we talk about choosing a place for planting badan, then the most suitable option would be a site with slight shading. In the shade, the leaves will be luxurious, but the flowers are inconspicuous. In the open sun, the situation will be much worse: the plants will be very weak and dehydrated.

Avoid moving

Bergenia loves feeding very much, but at the same time it is difficult to tolerate transplants. In principle, this is an unnecessary measure, because in one place this plant feels great for decades. In winter, he doesn't need shelter. It is needed only when frost binds the soil, not yet covered with snow. With the onset of spring, the berry is put in order: the old leaves are removed, and after the end of flowering, the peduncles are cut off, which have lost their attractive appearance. In order for the flower not to interfere with neighboring plants, it is advisable to plant it no closer than 50 cm from them.

Universal decor

In general, badan is an unpretentious plant and does not cause any trouble to its owners. But in wet years, the plant can suffer from slugs or fungal infections. In this case, it will have to be treated with insecticides or fungicides. The best way to reproduce bergenia is to divide the bush. Often, plants immediately take root in a new place and actively develop.

Bergenia is ideal for creating various floral arrangements. It will look good in a flower garden, in a rockery, in a rabatka and on an alpine slide. With the help of badan, you can decorate gardens, borders, banks of reservoirs, terraces and slopes. If we talk about decorative floriculture, then ciliate berry, purple berry and Delavey berry are most often used in it. In nature, these species are not found.
