The time for planting winter garlic is approaching. This article is for beginners, experienced summer residents can not waste time reading it. Although, if desired, they can share their successful or sad experiences. Those who are faced with planting garlic for the first time will find simple and useful rules, adhering to which, you can get a decent harvest of the demanded spice. Garlic will not only be beneficial in your diet, but it will also help keep a number of garden plants free from pests
Spring or winter?
How do these two types of garlic differ from each other:
*
Spring garlic planted in the ground in spring, and the harvest is harvested in late summer or autumn. Its teeth are smaller than those of winter garlic, but they are better and longer stored (up to two years). Spring garlic is also called "non-shooting", because it does not release arrows, on which bulbs are formed - miniature cloves of garlic to prolong its genus.
*
Winter garlicthey are planted in the soil by the end of October, so that it has time to take root before the onset of frost, but does not have time to germinate strongly to the surface, so that the shoots will not be killed by these frosts. Today's climate is full of unpredictable gifts in the form of a long warm autumn, exciting November. Therefore, it has become more difficult to guess the timing of planting winter garlic. The harvest is in July.
Winter garlic has correspondingly larger cloves, but it is more difficult to store it. As a rule, in April it already begins to germinate.
The plant produces a strong "bulbous", which is recommended to be cut when it reaches a length of 10 centimeters. This is done so that the plant does not waste energy on feeding the bulbs, and sends all its useful reserves to the bulbs, delighting the gardener with a decent harvest. If you want to experiment, then you can leave two or three arrows to get small planting material. Having planted it in the fall, you will get one-clove, not large garlic next summer. And already from it the next year the usual multi-toothed bulbs will grow.
General principles of growing garlic
The principles of caring for different types of garlic are basically the same, except for some seasonal points. In terms of their taste and useful properties, both types are also the same. Therefore. the choice of the type depends mainly on the storage possibilities of the garlic. For fun, you can try to grow both species, and only then decide which one suits you best.
Common to the two species is the plant's love for fertile soils. Fertile soils of sandy loam or loamy type are suitable for them. The acidity of the soil is closer to neutral.
For garlic, beds are suitable, on which cabbage, peas or beans, zucchini or pumpkins grew before them. But onion beds or growing garlic in the same garden for two years in a row will give sad results.
It is not at all necessary to allocate a separate bed for the garlic. It can be planted according to the so-called "compacted planting" method, when it is placed next to other crops. You just need to remember about the photophilousness of garlic.
Cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries and wild strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries, black currants, roses will be happy to be next to garlic. Garlic will scare away slugs, caterpillars, borers from them, and black spot from roses.
Spring garlic
The spring planting time is determined by the soil temperature. When the spring sun has licked off the remnants of the snow and warmed up the soil to 5-7 above zero, you can start planting garlic.
The height of the tooth dictates the planting depth. The depth is equal to twice the height of the tooth. If a separate bed is prepared for the garlic, then we place the cloves at a distance of 10 centimeters from each other in a row. We leave 20 centimeters of free land between the rows.
If the soil has already dried out, water the plantings abundantly. Mulch the rows with light mulch.
Winter garlic
As described above, it is very important to predict a favorable landing time. A couple of weeks before planting, we prepare a bed so that the dug soil has time to settle. When digging the earth, we add humus or compost, mineral fertilizers. At the bottom of the grooves made along the bed, we pour a layer from 1.5 to 3 cm of coarse sand or wood ash to prevent rot.
We make the distance between the large cloves a little more than for spring garlic, 15-20 cm. We leave 20-25 cm between the rows. We also increase the planting depth, bringing it to 15-20 cm in the presence of loose soil.
Be sure to mulch the plantings with peat or a mixture of sawdust with garden soil with a layer of at least two centimeters thick. And we are waiting for spring shoots.
