We plant fruit trees in May. For many gardeners, apricot has become a reality. From a heat-loving exotic, it has long turned into an ordinary fruit tree that grows in mid-latitudes and tolerates winter well. The main thing is to know how to choose the right variety
Hardy
This variety is considered one of the best representatives of winter hardy apricots. The seedling is distinguished by a particularly thick bark, which does not suffer even at minus 30. The buds are especially resistant, which are not susceptible to freezing with the onset of return spring frosts during the swelling period.
The tree is fast-growing, after planting a 2-year-old seedling, bears fruit in the 5th year. Hardy belongs to the group of large apricot trees. Fruits are medium-sized, golden-coral, round in shape. The skin is covered with typical pubescence, the flesh is orange, aromatic and soft.
Red-cheeked
The variety has a long history, since it appeared in the 50s. Perfectly adapted to low temperatures, resistant to adverse conditions, it is popular among amateur gardeners in central Russia. He is the founder of many apricot hybrids: Red-cheeked Salgirsky, Nikitinsky, Son of Krasnosheky, Nikolaevsky, etc. The advantage of the Krasnosheky variety is a short development time. It takes only 3-4 years from seedling to fruiting.
Red-cheeked is a medium-sized tree, considered mid-season. The fruits have a slight "hairiness" and a weakly expressed ovoid shape. Golden orange color is necessarily "diluted" with a red blush. The pulp is aromatic, moderate sourness, therefore, hardly noticeable.
Darling
The height of an adult tree is 5 meters; a 3-year-old sapling reaches these sizes quite quickly. The crown is formed due to powerful straight shoots, as a result, a lush paniculate mass develops. After planting in the 3rd year, you can already taste the apricots. The fruits have an original color with red blotches / dots. The main color of the skin is dark yellow, the pulp is lighter, the taste is sweet and sour.
The Favorite variety is valued not only for its frost resistance, but also for its resistance to ultraviolet light. Has "immunity" to typical diseases, in comparison with other types of apricots, less often affected by pests.
Honey
An adult tree does not grow more than 4 meters. Has a spreading and lush crown. Fruits are not large, yellow in color with a red speck, pubescence is barely noticeable. The pulp is uniformly yellow, fibrous-granular, medium density. The taste is invariably sweet.
The main advantage is the ability to plant in more northern regions. Honey easily tolerates -350C, in the presence of snow -40.
Russian
It takes 5-6 years from the landing of the two-year-old to the first collection. The crown grows up to 4 meters. Easily tolerates -300C, is not susceptible to invasion of parasites, is resistant to diseases. It is famous for its high yield - an adult tree gives up to 75 kg of fruit.
The fruits are yellow-red, ruddy, slightly flattened, of good taste with an amazing aroma, reaching 65 g. Due to their delicate structure, they do not tolerate heat treatment, they are used for juice, jam, jam.
Bullfinch
This variety is the leader in frost resistance and is planted in the northern regions. Late flowering excludes falling under spring frosts. The tree is miniature (1, 5-1, 7 m), not demanding on the soil.
Fruit color with golden tint and reddish-brown blush. They have a characteristic aroma and sweet juicy pulp. The skin sometimes gives a slight bitterness. The firmness of the fruit is ideal for storage and transportation. Apricots lie perfectly until mid-winter.
The disadvantage should be mentioned: the variety is not resistant to moniliosis, leaf spot, therefore, it needs preventive treatments.
Triumph North
On the basis of Red-cheeked, a hybrid Northern Triumph was obtained. High-yielding tree - up to 65 kg. The crown is spreading, formed on thick, erect branches (slope of 45 degrees). The fruits are slightly elongated, which gives them the appearance of an oval. The skin is yellow with a red-burgundy barrel. The pulp is orange, tender, sweet and sour with abundant juice.
This variety is chosen for several factors: frost resistance, flower buds do not respond to spring frosts. The plant does not dry out, is not affected by pests, is not afraid of cytosporosis, clasterosporium disease, moniliosis, verticillosis and other diseases.
Now you know which apricot variety to choose for a cold and unstable climate. Cultivate winter-hardy varieties on your site and you will be provided with aromatic and healthy fruits.
