The variety of collectors' palms knows no bounds. The most beloved, chic beauty is the Filamentous Washingtonia, named after President George Washington. Wild thickets are found in Southern California. At home, she is a decoration of streets, parks of large cities. How to grow a palm tree at home?
Description
Washingtonia filamentous seeds are sold in garden stores. It is distinguished by light green shiny fan leaves without a gray coating. Curls are formed along the edges of each plate - thin whitish threads. Hence the name of the variety. The lower part of the leaf petiole is covered with thorns. The lifespan of each plate is 3-4 years. The dried leaves do not fall off on their own, they bend down, forming a kind of skirt. At home, they are removed so as not to spoil the decorative appearance of the plants.
With a small volume of the original pot, the taproot turns into a fragile white spring. The room grows to 1.5-2 meters. Growth is slow, depending on growing conditions, care. The best habitat is a conservatory with high ceilings or conservatories.
It blooms with white fluffy panicles over the age of 12 years. The appearance of inflorescences is a rare phenomenon, not annual. Both types of buds are located on the same bush: male, female. As a result of artificial pollination, large, dark drupes are obtained.
Sowing
We mix in a bucket sod, leafy humus in equal amounts, add sand with small pebbles. At the bottom, we pierce the drainage holes, pour a layer of expanded clay. Fill a two-liter pot with a substrate. We break the shell of the nut, with small cuts. Soak in warm water for a day. We put a palm seed to a depth of 1 cm, cover it with earth on top, and moisten it. We put it in a warm place. The climatic conditions of the apartments in winter within 25 degrees make it possible not to use additional heating.
The germination time depends on the storage period of the planting material. Freshly harvested specimens appear in 2 weeks. Old seeds can germinate for a long time from 2 to 3 months. The first leaves look like long, xiphoid, narrow stripes, quite unlike adult bushes. Six months later, the plant is transplanted into a more spacious container.
By the age of 3, it reaches 70 cm, requires an increase in the pot. It is advisable to immediately transplant into a 10 liter bucket. Adult specimens do not tolerate this procedure well.
Care
They put the pots on the table near the window, shade the blinds from the sun's rays at noon, creating diffused light. The palm tree does not like burning direct sunlight. Penumbra is preferable for her. Drafts are contraindicated for the Californian beauty.
Requires high air humidity. Every day, the leaves are sprayed from a spray bottle with boiled warm water or wiped with a cloth. A wet sheet is put over the batteries or a room humidifier is placed nearby.
At the slightest drying out of the soil, the palm tree loses its turgor, drops the leaves. On the southern windows, suffering from heat, with insufficient watering, they often dry out completely. We have to cut off the dead plates, stimulating the formation of new ones.
In winter, watered 1-2 times a month in moderation, in summer weekly in the edge of the pot with warm boiled water. Trying not to hit the base of the trunk so as not to cause decay. Washingtonia is fed once a month in the spring-summer period with a complex fertilizer for palms with the addition of trace elements.
With poor care, lack of water, food grows more slowly, the trunk becomes thicker, the leaves are wider.
Gorgeous fan leaves give the plant a delicacy, the threads twisted in spirals create a special decorative effect. The compact size of adult specimens allows Washingtonia to be grown in the confined space of a city apartment. Try to make friends with an unusual palm tree!
