Cabbage mosaic affects different types of cabbage - kohlrabi and collard, Savoy and white cabbage with Brussels sprouts. This viral disease does not bypass a number of other cabbage plants belonging to the family - rutabagas, turnips, horseradish and radish with radish. If cabbage seedlings are affected by the ill-fated mosaic in the early stages, the losses will be especially great. Therefore, when growing seedlings, you should be especially vigilant

A few words about the disease

The very first symptoms of a cabbage mosaic begin to appear on young leaves and look like an interveinal unobtrusive mosaic. When such veins are bent, the leaves can be deformed.

As the disease develops, dark green edges form on the cabbage leaves. At first they can be seen near the main veins, and a little later the edges will appear on the rest of the leaves. All tissues between these veins begin to gradually become covered with chaotically located necrotic specks of light shades. And when the necrotic spots merge, the whole leaves will be affected.

Mosaic and cabbage testes are striking. Infected vegetation also exhibits mottling of stems, leaves and pods.

The first signs of a mosaic usually appear four to five weeks after the seedlings are planted. And if the thermometer reaches 25 degrees or more, the manifestation of the symptoms of the mosaic temporarily stops.

Causes a mosaic of cabbage a destructive virus, the spread of which occurs by harmful herbivorous mites, with the juice of infected vegetation, as well as sucking insects like aphids. Sometimes it spreads through various mechanical damage or with seeds. In addition, infected cruciferous weeds and mother plants are often the source of infection.

How to fight

Cabbage beds are not recommended to be placed in the immediate vicinity of fields where a variety of cruciferous crops are grown. You also need to observe spatial isolation from testes and other cabbage plantings.

It is very important to grow cabbage seedlings as healthy and strong as possible to reduce the likelihood of mosaic infections in cabbage. And seeds should be taken exclusively from healthy plants.

Before sowing, cabbage seeds are often heat treated - for this, they are dipped for twenty minutes in water heated to 48 - 50 degrees. After that, the seeds are transferred to cold water for two to three minutes, and then dried thoroughly to become free-flowing again. It is extremely important to know that a temperature of more than fifty degrees is detrimental to cabbage seeds, therefore, the water temperature must be carefully monitored.

To reduce the likelihood of damage to cabbage crops by all kinds of diseases, as well as to increase their yield, pre-sowing treatment of seed material with some chemical, biological and growth-stimulating drugs ("Phytocide", "Pseudobacterin-2", "Agatom-25" and a number of others) is allowed.

Infected plants with detected mosaic symptoms should be removed from the area immediately. All weeds, and from the aisles as well, must also be removed. For the destruction of cereal weeds after the cabbage has sprouted, you can use a drug called "Fuzilad Forte". An equally important measure will be a serious fight against aphids, from which spraying with insecticides is carried out.

A good effect is also given by spraying cabbage plantings with solutions of all kinds of useful microelements. And after harvesting, the remains of cabbage vegetation must be plowed as deeply into the soil as possible (at least half a meter).

As for radical methods of combating cabbage mosaic, such, unfortunately, have not yet been identified, therefore it is extremely important to direct all efforts precisely to the prevention of this unpleasant viral disease.
