How to deal with streaking tomatoes

The streakiness of tomatoes is also called streak or streaky spotting. Mainly this attack overtakes plants grown in violation of agrotechnical rules. Most often it is found in greenhouses and greenhouses - it is much less common to encounter streaking in open ground. This viral ailment is especially unpleasant in that it is quite difficult and far from always possible to get rid of it. And if tomato seedlings were attacked by streaking in the early stages, then the losses will be especially great

A few words about the disease

Streaks appear on the leaves, stalks and petioles of tomato in the form of stripes of dying tissue - both narrow and rather wide. And on the tomatoes themselves, the formation of necrotic specks of the most diverse shapes and sizes begins. The growth of fruits stops, and they lose their taste and marketability.

If the tomato leaves are damaged quite badly, then the spots begin to merge with each other and the leaves gradually die off. Severely infected plants are characterized by inhibition of development and often die. And ovaries with flowers disappear in the shortest possible time.

Streakiness is especially powerful when growing tomatoes in conditions of insufficient illumination (this happens if the crop is cultivated in autumn), low temperatures, and also with excessive application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers.

The streakiness is caused by viruses carried with diseased seeds, sap of infected vegetation, and non-disinfected working tools. It is also carried by herbivorous mites and sucking insects such as aphids. Often, the spread of the virus is noted during periods of pinching of tomatoes and the active life of aphids.

How to fight

It is quite possible to reduce the harm from streaking to a minimum by proper care of the vegetation. Excessively sharp temperature fluctuations should not be allowed under any circumstances. As for the seeds, it is preferable to take them only from healthy plants. If there is nowhere to take healthy seeds, it is allowed to sow the seeds after they have been stored for six months - the virus in this case will lose its ability to infect. Seeds taken from diseased vegetation are disinfected in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour. A good effect is also obtained by disinfection of dry seeds by heating them for a day or two, first at a temperature of 50 - 52 degrees, and then during a day at a temperature of 78 - 80 degrees. It is equally important when growing this crop and observing the rules of crop rotation.

It is recommended to replace the topsoil in greenhouses annually (up to fifteen centimeters). Alternatively, the soil can be warmed up by steaming it at a temperature of 100 degrees for one to two hours.

It is equally important to create favorable conditions for growing tomato seedlings - in this case, special attention should be paid to good lighting. Also, excessive application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers under the grown seedlings should not be allowed. And in the southern zone, it is generally recommended to cultivate tomatoes in a seedless way in order to reduce the likelihood of their infestation with streakiness.

Infected plants with signs of such an unpleasant ailment must be eliminated immediately. All weeds, including between rows, should also be removed. In addition, it is still necessary to fight aphids by spraying tomato plantings with insecticides. And when pinching tomatoes, you need to thoroughly disinfect the tools used with a five percent solution of potassium permanganate.

In the evening, spraying tomatoes with solutions of all kinds of trace elements is very useful. An excellent effect can be achieved with the help of such a solution: for ten liters of water, 4 grams of manganese sulfate is taken, as well as two grams of zinc sulfate, boric acid and copper sulfate. And a few days before planting the seedlings, it is a good idea to spray with a solution of boric acid.
