Beautiful shapes, bright pictures attract the attention of connoisseurs of beauty in garden shops. I would like to create a large collection, decorate the site with unusual items. What conditions do daylilies need to grow successfully? What to look for when buying planting material?
Better conditions
Krasnodnev is unpretentious to soils, grows on any soil, except sandy. The flower's potential is revealed to the maximum on fertile, loose loamy permeable soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction of the environment. Excessive moisture in the spring-autumn period on heavy soils leads to decay of the roots.
Loves light areas. Put up with light partial shade. In the shade, the inflorescences become smaller, the green mass is stretched, the decorative qualities deteriorate. Drought-resistant.
Frost-resistant in the Middle Lane. In the northern regions, light cover or mulching of the soil with plant residues is required. Snowless periods with frosts below -18 degrees are dangerous.
Purchase of planting material
In the store, Krasnodnev appears on sale in early spring in plastic bags with sawdust or peat. Carefully inspect the bushes for damage, disease (rot). The rhizomes should look juicy, without signs of drying out, wrinkling.
At this time, the weather outside is not suitable for planting. In order not to torment the seedlings in the refrigerator, they are planted at home in a flower pot of small diameter. Carefully remove the plants from the bag. Soak for several hours in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or epine. Dry the material slightly.
The diameter of the pot is matched to the size of the rhizome. It should fit freely in a straightened form, without creases of the thickenings. A hole is pierced at the bottom to drain excess water. Pour in layers of expanded clay, sand, fertile soil. A peat substrate mixed with sand, garden soil in a 2: 1: 1 ratio is suitable.
The roots are spread in the middle of the container, covered with the remaining soil, leaving the green part of the seedling on the surface. The soil is leveled flush with the root collar. Watered lightly with water, fill up the settled earth if necessary.
At first, they keep the pots in partial shade, allowing the leaves to get used to the lighting (if there are bushes that have started to grow in the package). On dormant plants, after 2 weeks, sprouts appear from the buds. After 10 days, the containers are transferred to the windowsill. In the evening hours, cloudy days, additional illumination with phytolamps will be required.
They are fed once a month with a complex fertilizer for flowers. Water when the soil dries up. At the beginning of June, daylilies are ready for planting in flower beds.
Landing in the ground
Prepare the site in advance. Scatter compost or peat over the surface. Heavy soils are loosened with sand. They dig it to a depth of 25-30 cm, choosing perennial weeds. The distance between plants is set to 50-60 cm, depending on the growing time, the size of the variety.
In wet areas at the bottom of the hole, drainage is made from broken brick, expanded clay. Top 5-7 cm of sand, then fertile soil. In the middle, a small depression (5-6 cm) is made, with a width equal to the diameter of the underground part. Moisten the soil for shrinkage. The roots of the daylily are straightened, sprinkled with the prepared substrate at the level of the root collar. Gently compact the soil around the bushes.
Too deep planting leads to oppression of the plant, weak flowering, yellowing, death of leaf plates. Shallow embedding - increases the likelihood of freezing in the winter.
Plants received by mail or bought immediately before planting in a store are first shaded with wooden boxes, creating diffused lighting. This technique helps to avoid leaf burns, makes it possible to better take root in a weak root system in a new place.
We will consider the breeding methods of daylilies in the next article.
