Buying a coveted plot, many summer residents are happy to anticipate how they will build a small country house on it and place a huge vegetable garden or a spectacular lawn near it. And if to build a house it is enough to just level the plot, then with the placement of a garden or a lawn, everything is not so simple, because in this case it is important to make every effort in order not to harm the soil and provide the growing crops with proper water supply. How to properly level the plot for the future vegetable garden or lawn?
Why do you need to level the site?
A level plot for both the garden and the lawn is a guarantee of an optimal and full-fledged water supply for crops and herbs planted on them. If the site is replete with hills, the soil on it will dry out, and moisture will quickly erode. And in areas rich in depressions, accumulations of water are often observed, leading to its stagnation. And safety in this case also plays an important role, because the risk of falling on an uneven area increases significantly. But from the house, both the garden and the lawn must certainly be separated by a slight slope, that is, they should be located a little lower.
It will be somewhat easier to level the area for a vegetable garden than for a lawn, since the garden does not need perfectly flat surfaces. After cleansing and preparing the site, zealous owners usually bring fertile soil and try to distribute it as evenly as possible over the area (it is quite acceptable to level it "by eye"). And when it settles a little, you should carry out one more filling and once again everything is well leveled.
As for leveling the terrain for the subsequent placement of a lawn on it, it is important to try to make the surface perfectly flat in this case - the site should already look proper before sowing green grass on it. To give it the proper look, all poured places should be carefully and repeatedly rolled, gradually compacting the soil layer and, if necessary, adding additional batches of fertile soil.
Training
Preparing the site for its subsequent leveling consists in clearing debris, collecting large boulders and numerous stones, as well as uprooting the stumps located on the site. An especially difficult task will be uprooting stumps - for its successful solution, if it is impossible to cope on your own, it makes sense to invite workers from an organization that provides such services. By the way, stones with stumps should not be thrown away: stones will become an excellent material for the construction of alpine slides or graceful paths, and hemp will be quite suitable for making original garden furniture.
Alignment methods
It is very easy and simple to level a more or less flat area - for this, it is dug up in the fall or plowed with a cultivator, and then leveled with a rake. And almost always there is enough of our own fertile soil for this, that is, there is no need to bring it additionally! If it is still lacking, then it is always possible to make up for its deficit with the help of imported soil. With the onset of spring, the terrain level is checked again and leveled again if necessary. And then you can immediately start sowing the site!
And with a rather complex relief, characterized by significant differences in height between depressions and hillocks, the terrain is first divided into several regular squares with the same side dimensions equal to one meter. Then, in the area of the tops, pegs are driven in, and they do this so that they protrude ten to fifteen centimeters above the soil surface. Further, the height of the pegs placed on the site should be leveled using a metal corner or a strong wooden lath, while ideally the length of this lath should exceed two meters - it is alternately applied to the ends of all adjacent pegs in all directions.
Then they find the upper and lower points and, having decided on the so-called "golden" mean, they begin to align the designated area exactly along this very middle. On squares with a higher level, several centimeters of fertile soil should be removed and, after cutting off the excess of the underlying underlying layer (it is also often called the washout horizon), pour back the previously removed fertile layer. And the squares with a lower level are filled with fertile soil brought in advance. Further, the entire surface is well leveled, making sure that all the pegs rise above the ground at the same distance. And, finally, the site is thoroughly rolled up, actively compacting the soil in general and the poured places in particular.
As you can see, the technology for leveling the site is not so difficult, but this event will require you to stock up on remarkable strength and patience - only in this case the work will be crowned with success!
