Do not be upset if you did not have time to sow flowers for seedlings in March or April. All is not lost yet! Indeed, even in May, you can still sow, and after a month and a half, admire the flowering meadows on your site. What kind of flowers can be propagated during this period? And where can they be grown?
Unpretentious annuals for "lazy" flower growers
Of course, the concepts of "florist" and "lazy" are incompatible. But when the hot spring-summer season comes, many summer residents have no time for flowers. And just for such a case, in order to save time and not waste it on caring for ornamental plants, you will need a list of these annuals that should be sown in the ground once - and no longer worry about their reproduction. They grow beautifully on their own, without care from the grower, and reproduce in the future by self-sowing.
First of all, you should pay attention to such a flower as escholzia. This plant is also called the California poppy. Its flowers really look like poppies with their delicate petals that flutter and flap their "wings" at the slightest breeze. But unlike poppies, escholzia has a richer color palette of flowers. She dissolves white, and yellow, and orange, and pink, and purple, and red, and crimson buds. There are varieties with a simple flower and a double flower. And the height of the flower is small, about 20-30 cm. It is good to place it in open sunny meadows.
If you prefer tall plants, then you should get cosme seeds. She reaches a height of almost human growth. In addition to bright multi-colored flowers, kosmeya is also interesting for its unusual decorative foliage. It consists of many thin filamentous leaves. And from a distance it seems that the flowers have blossomed and showered themselves with a translucent green cloud. Kosmeya will perfectly decorate an old fence or other unsightly areas.
Another practical garden “designer” is decorative sweet peas. Unlike cosmos, it does not grow as a bush and needs support. But it will also be a great solution if you need to hide an unfinished gazebo wall, an old fence, or decorate a netting with a net. By the way, if kosmeya begins to decorate your site in the first half of summer, then the peas will bloom their buds in the second and even in autumn.
Growing flowers in tree trunks
If on your site there is absolutely no place for a flower bed, there is also a way out. For example, some flowers grow well in tree trunks. And at the same time, they themselves do not suffer from the lacy penumbra of foliage and branches, nor do they compete with the tree for the feeding area. By the way, residents of urban high-rise buildings can also adopt this method of growing flowers. And thus decorate the courtyards near their entrances.
First of all, it is good to grow calendula in near-stem circles. However, you should pay attention to the plant variety. Because individual specimens grow up to the waist of a person. And the decorative bed turns into a real thicket of bushes.
To extend the flowering period, you can pinch off the blossoming flowers, and on the second or third day the calendula will again be strewn with new blossoming buds. And do not throw out the plucked inflorescences. It is best to dry them and store them as a medicine. A decoction of calendula has bactericidal properties and will be indispensable for gargling as a treatment and prophylaxis during an exacerbation of seasonal diseases. By the way, calendula perfectly coexists with potatoes in the garden.
Nasturtium may not be as useful as calendula, but it looks very decorative in the garden. But be careful when choosing a variety to plant under trees. Here dwarf varieties should be grown that do not throw out long lashes.
