Is it possible to control pests in winter?

It's winter outside, and it seems that gardeners and summer residents can rest with a clear conscience, occasionally doing the necessary work to maintain order on the site. In fact, this is not the case. Winter is no less important time than all the others, this time of the year is the most important period of preparation for the next summer cottage season. And there will always be work. For example, garden pest control

I know that this information will surprise many people, because it is customary to fight pests in spring, summer, autumn, spraying trees and shrubs. But lately, thanks to the rather warm winter days, it is possible to clean the garden in advance.

We destroy pests that winter on trees

First of all, carefully examine the trees located on the territory of your site, it is advisable to pay attention to the "ownerless" trees near your garden-garden-dacha, otherwise in the season pests can move those trees to yours. Pay attention to everything: unopened leaves, cracks in the bark, various growths. For example, the hawthorn hibernates quite successfully in leaves that seem to have simply lingered on a tree. So carefully remove all the remaining leaves, bunches of leaves, entwined with cobwebs, carefully put them in a metal container and burn them.

Now we carefully examine the bark. On young shoots and apple trees, copperhead and apple aphid are very fond of wintering. It is not difficult to find them, you just need to be extremely careful: aphid eggs are black in color and about 3 millimeters in diameter, and the eggs of the aphid are brightly colored - orange - but smaller in size, about 1 millimeter. Eggs are attached to the branches with small "shoots". On a warm day, preferably at the end of winter (Important! The treatment must be carried out before the buds swell!) Or at the very beginning of spring, treat the areas affected by pests with a nitrafen solution.

Various ticks and insects like to lay eggs near the buds, as well as in cracks and in places where branches forks. Carefully remove the masonry with a knife, thin file or any other, but always sharp object. It can be put into a metal container with previously collected leaves and destroyed together with them.

If your garden is inhabited by the apple moth, then it is impossible to fight with its caterpillars now. But it is possible to carefully prepare for their destruction: fix homemade trapping belts made of burlap, cardboard or other materials on the trees. In the spring, all that remains is to destroy the caterpillars from the hunting belts.

We destroy pests that winter in the upper layers of the soil

This is not difficult. We choose any day when the soil under the trees and shrubs has thawed and carefully loosen it to a shallow depth. As a result of these simple manipulations, at the very first frost, such pests as weevil, apple flower beetle and so on will die. By the way, to destroy the weevil, the soil must be loosened at the raspberry planting sites, for some reason weevils prefer to winter in the raspberry tree.

And there are pests, for the destruction of which it is necessary not to loosen the soil, but to cover it with a layer of peat, humus, mulch, and so on, so that in the spring they cannot get out. Such pests include currant and gooseberry moths. By the way, another option for getting rid of these pests is to cover the trunk circles with covering material, roofing felt or other dense material in early spring. The goal is still the same - to block the exit to the surface.

We attract assistants

Yes, yes, to fight harmful insects, you need to attract helpers, and it is best to do this right now. And the main assistants in this matter, as you know, are birds. To attract them to the site, you need to do any, even the simplest feeders will do and regularly pour food into them.

And the last thing. If you did not manage to remove the leaves in the fall, then do it on any suitable day, because the leaves are one of the best and favorite wintering grounds for harmful insects. Burn all the collected leaves, and the ash can be used as fertilizer for the site.
