Egeria dense often also called Elodea dense, as well as Brazilian Elodea and large-flowered Elodea. In Latin, the name of this plant can sound like this: Egeria densa, Elodea densa, Anacharis densa. This plant should be classified as Vodokrasovye.

Description of egeria dense

This plant is submerged, as for the light regime, the dense egeria can develop well both in the sun and in partial shade. Under natural conditions, this plant can be found in South America, namely in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. In addition, egeria dense also grows in the moderately warm subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and North America.

According to the development cycle, this plant is perennial. The growth rate of egeria dense will be quite high. So this plant is completely submerged, it is capable of forming real thickets, and it is very easy to root. The stem of egeria is dense in length, reaching about two meters, this stem is branched and fragile, it has whorls of rather small leaves. The stem itself will root at the nodes.

As for the decorative properties of the plant, the leaves of the dense egeria are especially beautiful. The leaves are bright green in color, they are about one to four centimeters long, and these leaves can only be two millimeters wide. All leaves are pointed at the end; in one whorl, the presence of about four to eight leaves is observed. At the same time, a plant called Canadian Elodea will have three leaves in a whorl.

Egeria dense bloom occurs at the end of the summer season. This plant is made in white colors.

The flowers of the plant are very noticeable, they are about twelve to twenty-five millimeters in diameter. The flowers are endowed with three wide and rounded petals, which will rise above the water. The flowers of egeria dense are dioecious, while the male flowers are larger, they have petals about eight to ten millimeters long. Female flowers will be much smaller, they are about six to seven millimeters long.

Care and cultivation of dense egeria

The plant should be planted in the ground in a specific container. The planting depth of egeria dense should be about sixty centimeters and one and a half meters. It is recommended to plant the plant in the ground around the end of May or the beginning of June. Any soil is suitable for favorable plant growth, this plant is even able to withstand alkaline water. It is also important to remember that it is recommended to limit the spread of dense egeria.

The plant is considered extremely unstable to winter cold snaps. For this reason, the plant should be transferred to the aquarium for the winter period. Many gardeners believe that this plant is capable of secreting substances that will inhibit the growth of blue-green algae.

Surplus of this plant should be removed continuously throughout the season, and this removal must be done very carefully. This circumstance is explained by the fact that the juice of the dense egeria is very toxic to the fry, and is also capable of inhibiting the growth of other plants.

As for the reproduction of this plant, it occurs through cuttings. For vegetative propagation, you will need to cut off the stem about twenty centimeters long. Such segments of five to ten pieces should be thrown into the water to a depth of about sixty to seventy centimeters, or this plant should be fixed at the bottom. In those reservoirs where there is no soil, it is recommended to place the plant in special containers.
