Poultry garden (lat. Ornithogalum) - a flowering perennial, which is a member of the Hyacinth family. The second name of the plant is ornithogalum.

Description

The poultry plant is a hardy bulbous plant, the height of which can vary from ten to ninety centimeters. In the middle of its basal green linear leaves there are charming little white veins. By the way, these leaves usually appear earlier than peduncles, and in some varieties they appear in general in the fall, after which they successfully overwinter and only then die off.

The oblong-ovate, rounded or ovoid bulbs of the poultry yard are covered with rather dense covering scales, and their diameter usually does not exceed two to five centimeters. By the way, the roots of this plant do not die off - they tend to gradually change. And the wide-open white or slightly yellowish flowers of the poultry farm gather in very spectacular corymbose or racemose apical inflorescences. On the outer sides of the tepals, there are usually small green stripes. As for the smell, it is absent from the flowers of the poultry farm.

The fruits of the poultry farm have the appearance of neat bolls, and for its black flat seeds, a round shape is usually characteristic.

In total, the genus of the poultry farm includes about one hundred and thirty species.

Where grows

The poultry farm grows mainly in the mountainous regions of North Africa and Eurasia.

Usage

In decorative floriculture, the umbrella poultry garden is especially popular. And since this graceful handsome man is usually referred to as late spring flowering plants, it will look great in absolutely any type of flower garden. The poultry farm is especially suitable for planting in rockeries. In addition, it is ideal for planting in greenhouses.

Low-growing species, endowed with relatively low peduncles, can be safely planted near paths, and plants with sufficiently large peduncles are perfect for planting in small groups. The birdhouse will go well with mouse hyacinth, tulips and daffodils.

Do not forget that the entire plant (that is, every single part of it!) Is poisonous! This is due to the content of cardiac glycosides and unidentified alkaloids in the poultry farm. Nevertheless, the bulbs of the Pyrenean poultry farm are eaten, both in pickled and fried forms, and the sprouts of several more species of this plant can be eaten by analogy with asparagus.

Growing and caring

The poultry garden will grow equally well both in sunny and semi-shady areas, while absolutely any soil is perfect for growing it. The main thing is not to forget that this plant absolutely does not tolerate excessive waterlogging and even more waterlogging. And it should be watered sparingly!

The poultry farm does not require any special care, and its aboveground parts at the end of flowering are quite acceptable to mow.

Reproduction of the poultry farm in most cases is carried out by means of baby bulbs - depending on the type, they are planted at a distance of twenty to fifty centimeters from each other and to a depth of eight to ten centimeters. You can propagate this plant with seeds, sowing them before winter, but with this method of reproduction, young plants will bloom only in the fourth or sixth year. At the same time, in the same area, the poultry farm will grow well for five to six years. As for all kinds of pests and diseases, then this handsome man is very resistant to them.
