Ocheretnik white (lat. Rhynchospora alba) Is an elegant plant from the Sedge family.

Description

The white ocheret is a friable perennial, endowed with bizarre scaly rhizomes. The height of its sinewy and rather strong triangular stems can vary from ten to forty centimeters, and the width of its narrow-linear leaves often reaches 1 - 2 mm. By the way, these grooved linear leaves can be not only stem, but also basal.

The inflorescences of white ossicles are capable of forming from two to eight slightly spaced or one colorful apical spikelet. And its filmy ovate-elliptical cover scales slightly whitish at the edges, turning brown near the fruit and slightly pointed at the tops. In most cases, one upper flake, as well as one to three lower scales, are sterile. All of them are located in the spikelets either double-row or spiral.

The flowers of this interesting plant sit on rather long peduncles in the axils of the upper leaves or are located at the very tips of the stems in funny bunches. They are almost always bisexual, although the top flowers can sometimes be male. And the white devil blooms mainly in June.

The fruits of this herbaceous perennial have the appearance of compressed nuts, endowed with expanded bases of the columns and slightly sharpened towards the spouts. Fruiting of the oregano usually occurs in July.

In nature, the populations of this plant are very small in number and occupy relatively small areas, and the white ossula usually lives quite scattered. And the reason for the gradual decline in its population is considered to be the drainage of swamps and the specificity of the habitat of a beautiful plant.

Where grows

Ocheretnik white is most often found in the European part of Russia, as well as in the Far East and Western Siberia. This attractive plant is included not only in the lists of rare plants, but also in the Red Data Books of a number of Russian regions. And it grows white wildcat mainly on moss bogs (especially on sphagnum) and on the outskirts of swampy lakes.

Usage

Ocheretnik white is widely used to decorate all kinds of reservoirs. By the way, it is often compared to a luxurious fireworks display. This handsome man looks very good when decorating meadows. And for floral arrangements, it makes a great cutting material.

Sometimes white ossum is also used as a dried flower. And it also makes excellent nutritious hay, which is eaten with great pleasure by livestock.

Growing and caring

It feels best on damp shores, as well as in swamps with shallow waters - it is there that it is recommended to grow it. It is usually planted with the onset of spring, after placing it in convenient containers, and the planting depth of this plant can vary from two and a half to five centimeters. It is very unpretentious to soils - it grows equally well on swampy and sandy soils. True, weakly acidic loamy soils will be the most suitable substrate for it.

It is almost always propagated by seedlings, despite its ability to reproduce vegetatively. By dividing the bushes, this culture is propagated either in the spring or in early summer after flowering. Once every few years, it is imperative to divide it - the fact is that this moisture-loving handsome man is characterized by a gradual radial increase.

Despite the fact that the white ossicle is characterized by good winter hardiness, it is capable of wintering in the open field only in the southern Russian regions. And in the middle lane, it is placed for the winter in containers filled with water and placed on light cool windowsills or transferred to a fairly cold greenhouse.

In care, this plant is very unpretentious - its truly incredible plasticity makes it able to withstand not only summer drought, but also systematic flooding. And yet, despite such unpretentiousness, the white ossheret will be very grateful for high-quality monthly feeding.
