Prickly carp (lat. Echinocystis) - an ornamental-leaved plant, which is a representative of the Pumpkin family. Another name is mad cucumber or echinocystis.

Description

The prickly carp is a herbaceous annual liana with a height of two and a half to four meters. And these vines are attached to the supports with the help of small tenacious tendrils. And they are all endowed with the ability to grow at a truly lightning speed!

Small monoecious flowers of the prickly carp are painted white, while both single female flowers and male flowers gathering in spectacular brushes are dislocated in the same leaf sinuses. As a rule, this plant blooms in July-August. And his flowers are very fragrant!

The "hedgehog" fruits of the prickly fruit (it is thanks to them that this plant got its name) are colored in a rich green color, have rather large sizes and are covered with soft sparse thorns. After some time, these thorns gradually dry out. When the fruits of the prickly fruit ripen, the "caps" located at their tops open, and rather large seeds of a dark brown or black color spill out of the capsules. Therefore, in addition to everything, the prickly plant is also considered a weed plant.

Where grows

North America is considered to be the homeland of the prickly fruit. And in the conditions of the Russian central zone, only one single species of this plant is able to grow - the lobed prickle.

Usage

In culture, the prickly fruit is very unpretentious, perhaps that is why it is often used for vertical design. And in the horizontal direction, it also develops no worse! A single plant can easily provide a luxurious green "screen" for a plot of six to eight square meters! However, the prickly carp is ideal for decorating not only walls, but also gazebos, trellises or pergolas. This handsome man can boast of special decorativeness at the fruiting stage. And his impressive unpretentiousness allows him to grow and develop quite safely even where no other vines take root!

Thornberry seeds are edible, so if you wish, you can safely use them in cooking: either roast them, or use them by analogy with pumpkin seeds.

Growing and caring

The prickly carp will grow well both in open and in shady or semi-shady areas. At the same time, the soil can be absolutely any, and this plant also does not need careful care. The most important thing is to water it from time to time when a drought is established. In this case, there is absolutely no need for top dressing either, the only thing is that during the period of growing young seedlings, thorough weeding will not be superfluous (so that the weeds do not inhibit the growth of the plant).

Reproduction of the prickly fruit takes place by sowing seeds before winter or with the onset of spring, while it is immediately planted in permanent places. By the way, it is best to sow seeds before winter, dropping two or three seeds into each "nest". And in the spring, when the tiny seedlings grow a little, they begin to be transplanted with a distance of at least eighty centimeters between the plants. Also, the prickly plant is endowed with the ability to give abundant self-seeding, which often leads to a very aggressive seizure of territories not intended for its cultivation. But the prickly carp is practically not susceptible to any diseases, and pests are not at all interested in them!
