Reed (Latin Scirpus) - a perennial herb grown in water bodies and coastal areas. Widely distributed in subtropical and temperate zones. It includes about 300 species in its genus, only 20 are found in Russia.
Common species in Russia
* Lake reed (Latin Scirpus lacustris) is a plant characterized by rigid cylindrical stems, the height of which varies from 150 to 250 cm. The inflorescence is corymbose-paniculate, sometimes compressed. Blooms in early June. Widespread in Siberia.
* Forest reed (Latin Scirpus sylvaticus) is a plant characterized by a triangular stem, it can be no more than 100 cm in height. The inflorescence is a panicle, has a green color. The root system is creeping. Reed leaves are long, rough along the edge. Blooms from mid-June to early July.
* Drooping reeds (Latin Scirpus cernuus) - this species is also called indoor reeds, or hanging reeds. The inflorescence is branched, multi-spikelet. Often, drooping reeds are grown in hanging pots, baskets, pots and flowerpots. Differs in particular attractiveness.
Cultivation and reproduction
Reed gives preference to soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. It develops well in shallow areas of water bodies or in a swampy coastal zone. Has a positive attitude to sunlight, but also tolerates shaded places well.
Varietal forms are more demanding, in the winter season they need shelter, since they can freeze a little. That is why experienced gardeners are advised to grow crops in special containers, which are immediately lowered to the bottom of the reservoir. Varieties of reeds grown in coastal zones and pots require abundant watering and regular spraying from a spray bottle, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers that do not contain calcium will not be superfluous.
Varietal reeds are propagated by dividing the bushes in spring or autumn, but species can be sown with seeds. The plant is resistant to diseases and pests, rarely affected by aphids or spider mites. When intruders are found, the reeds are treated with a weak solution of Bordeaux liquid.
Care
The main task of gardeners when caring for reeds is to limit growth, since plants are able to capture the entire territory of the reservoir, which is highly undesirable. After all, getting rid of a few reeds is much easier than getting rid of a whole undergrowth. The plant does not need feeding. In late autumn, the stalks of the reeds are cut with shears and burned.
Application
Reeds are an excellent element of the decor of garden ponds, decorated in a landscape style. These plants give a natural flavor to almost all types of aquatic compositions, especially in combination with egg capsules, water lilies and eichornia. Also, reeds can be used as a pot and terrarium plant. Dry reeds are often used in the preparation of bouquets and various compositions, including weaving baskets, bags and carpets, which perfectly fit into the interior of any home.
