Vallisneria spiral (lat. Vallisneria spiralis) - aquarium plant; a representative of the Vallisneria genus of the Vodokrasovye family. In nature, it is found in the south of North America, in the Ciscaucasia, on the Black Sea, the Far East, the Volga. It is actively used by aquarists for landscaping aquariums.
Characteristics of culture
Vallisneria spiral is represented by perennial plants endowed with a creeping rhizome of a milky yellow color up to 10 cm long. The foliage is linear, no more than 80 cm long, an average width of 1, 2 cm, finely serrated at the edges, dull at the tip, green, collected in a rosette. The foliage is always very strong, elastic, not dangerous to herbivores.
Stamen flowers are small, sit on shortened pedicels, collected in dense bunches. At the time of flowering, the flowers independently move away from the plant and rise to the surface of the water. Pistillate flowers do not form inflorescences, they are formed singly, they also rise to the surface of the water on a long peduncle, which, after pollination, twists into a spiral and lowers the flower under the water.
Features of the content
In general, spiral Vallisneria is not too demanding on growing conditions and maintenance. The composition of the soil and its structure do not play a special role, but aquaurmists advise growing a plant on gravel with a fraction of 5-6 mm thick, while the thickness of the soil should be about 3.5-4 cm. will delight you with active growth and development.
It is worth taking care of the lighting. Wallying spiral loves illuminated places, in the shade they develop very slowly. The optimum temperature is 18-30C. Lower temperatures are detrimental to the plant. The acidity of the water should be neutral, the hardness is medium. It should be noted that the plant does not like tap water with a lot of rust, and it also does not tolerate the commonwealth with an excess of copper.
It is better to plant Vallisneria spiral at the walls of the aquarium. Planting density does not matter. Growing up, the plant forms an attractive brilliant green wall, which serves as a background for large and bright aquarium fish. You can also plant Vallisneria in islands, holding back floating aquatic plants that do not attach to the soil.
