Meat red cotton wool (lat. Asclepias incarnata) - a representative of the Vatochnik genus of the Kutrov family. The homeland of the plant is considered to be North America. There, the species grows naturally, but is more common in the central part and in the east. The species is decorative, actively used in horticulture and floriculture.

Characteristics of culture

Meat-red vatnik is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 1, 2 m high, equipped with highly leafy branched stems. The stems, in turn, are crowned with an opposite, wide lanceolate or, conversely, elongated foliage, covered with short, few hairs over the entire surface.

The flowers are pink with a purple tint or red, very fragrant (they say that they do not smell like chocolate, like other members of the genus, but chocolate butter), collected in lush, but not too large, umbellate inflorescences. Flowering is relatively short, does not exceed 35 days. As a rule, it occurs in the middle of summer or in the first or second decade of August.

Meat-red vatochnik compares favorably with its closest relatives not only with high decorative properties and a magical piercing aroma, but also with winter hardiness. It survives winters well without shelter, although the gardeners of the Urals and Siberia advise covering the plants for the winter with a layer of dry foliage.

Today, meat-red cotton wool, one of the few, is used in breeding, and very successfully. Especially the Ice Ballet variety has proven itself. It is represented by plants up to 1 m high, over which white flowers with a delicate chocolate aroma flaunt. The variety goes well with the main species in color, as well as meadow, pearl-barley and miscanthus.

Growing features

Most experienced gardeners recommend growing meat red wool through seedlings. Sowing is carried out in the third decade of March - the second decade of April in seedling boxes filled with a nutrient substrate. The seeding depth is 1 cm. It is advisable to lay a drainage layer on the bottom of the seedling box, it will not allow moisture stagnation and decay of the roots of young plants.

As a rule, seedlings appear amicably, subject to all conditions - after 10-14 days. Covering with film or glass will help to speed up the process as much as possible, which will provide a greenhouse effect and create favorable conditions for seed germination. The main thing is to systematically water the crops and carry out airing.

With the emergence of seedlings, it is recommended to keep the seedling boxes in a room where the air temperature is not lower than 17C. When at least 2-3 leaves are formed on the seedlings, it is important to pick into separate containers. Seedlings should be transplanted into open ground not earlier than the first decade of June, early planting is undesirable, since there is a high probability of night frosts.

Culture care

Meat-red cotton wool cannot be called a whimsical plant. Caring for him is relatively easy and does not take a lot of time. To ensure active development and abundant flowering, it is important to regularly water the plants with warm, settled water, trying to prevent waterlogging and, conversely, overdrying the soil. Water volumes should be increased during dry periods.

Top dressing is also important. In early spring, you should feed with rotted organic matter and complex mineral fertilizers, better sprinkling them over the melting snow. Together with melt water, they will make their way into the deep layers of the soil and nourish the plants as much as possible. If the soil is poor, additional fertilizing can be done before flowering. This manipulation will provide more lush bloom.
