Brodieya it is also sometimes known under such a name as tritelia. This plant is included in the group of perennial plants, the greatest value of the brodieya is due to its early, very abundant and long flowering. In total, there are about ten types of different colors in this genus.

Description of brodiei

In height, the plant can range from twenty to sixty centimeters, while the height of the plant is directly dependent on the type of brodie. The height of the flower ranges between twenty and sixty centimeters. The length of each flower is four centimeters, and purely outwardly, these flowers very much resemble bell flowers. In nature, species of brodiea are known, which will have tubular flowers. As for the flowers themselves, most often they are painted in white, blue, lilac or pink tones. Blooming brodiea begins in June.

Care and cultivation of brodiea

For the favorable development of this plant, well-drained and light soils are needed. For planting brodiei, sunny or slightly darkened places are needed, which will be protected from gusts of wind. During the active growth of this plant, it needs regular watering, it is also important to remember that brodieia refers to moisture-loving plants, but this plant does not tolerate prolonged stagnation of moisture. When the leaves of the brodiea begin to turn yellow and dry out, watering should be completely stopped.

It is also important to remember that it is necessary to apply organic fertilizers, for example, humus and compost, to brodie. Fertilizers should be applied both during planting and in spring, and besides that, also as mulch.

The plant will not tolerate transplanting well, for this reason the corms should be immediately planted in their permanent place. It should also be noted that even without a transplant in the same place, this plant can grow for many years.

For the winter period, the plants should be covered with foliage or mulching with peat. In places where very cold winters are expected, before the autumn frosts, corms should be dug up and dried for a couple of days, for which a dry and ventilated place is ideal, after which the corms should be placed in containers filled with dry sand. They will be stored in such containers until spring, and the storage temperature should not be lower than five degrees Celsius. Actually, this method can hardly be called the most optimal, because the plant tolerates transplantation rather poorly. However, growing brodiei in pots is also permissible, in this case you will not have to dig out the corms in the winter.

Breeding brodieya

Reproduction of brodiei occurs through corms or with the help of seeds. Corms should be planted in September or April in open ground, while they should be planted in a permanent place. In this case, the corms should be placed at a depth of eight centimeters, and the distance between them should be about ten to twelve centimeters.

As for the seeds, they are sown in special containers in April, while the soil should be light. Seeds should be left for germination in a bright place, which, however, will be reliably protected from direct sunlight. In regions with a warm climate, seedlings should be planted in open ground in the autumn period, in the same regions where cold winters are observed, such planting should be done only next spring. If you are planting seeds in pots, then this should be done in the fall. It is important to remember that when planting, you should try to keep the earthen lump unchanged.
