Belamkanda is a perennial plant, the main distinguishing features of which will be a very decorative and long flowering.

Description of belamkanda

The flowers are very similar to lily flowers, and their diameter ranges from five to seven centimeters. It is worth noting that each flower will only bloom for one day. In height, the belamkandas are capable of reaching sixty to seventy centimeters. Growing this flower at home is allowed. This plant is considered a herbaceous short-rhizome perennial plant; there are twelve to twenty flowers on the inflorescence of belamkanda, which will be quite large. The perianth has six lobes, which have grown together at the very base, and the inner lobes will be noticeably narrower than the outer ones. Belamcanda has a simple perianth and three stamens. After the end of flowering, bolls are formed, the length of which will be about three centimeters and they will have thin membranous walls. Belamcanda seeds are black and round in shape, and they are about half a millimeter in diameter.

In Vietnam and China, this plant is regarded as a very valuable medicinal crop; belamcanda is even considered one of the integral elements of Chinese traditional medicine. As an ornamental plant, belamcanda is found in Asia, Europe and America. There are several plant species in culture, which have yellow, yellowish-red or lilac flowers. It is noteworthy that in Russia belamcanda is not so popular, while the plant is very resistant to growing standards in central Russia, even the cultivation of belamcanda is allowed in the northern regions.

As for such a species as the Chinese White Kanda, this species is endangered and even listed in the Red Book of Russia.

In Russia, in the middle lane, the flowering of the plant begins around the end of June and continues until the end of August, however, in its homeland, belamkanda can bloom from May to June. The belamcanda flower opens in the first half of the day, and at about five or six in the evening it begins to wilt. However, such a short life of a flower has its advantages: the expectation of flowering becomes more exciting, and the life of a flower itself is so interesting to observe.

Most often, decorative forms of this plant with rather large yellow or yellowish-red flowers are used in culture.

Care and cultivation of belamkanda

For the normal development of belamcanda, sunny areas are necessary, however, a small shade is also allowed. The plant will need well-drained soil that is fairly moist and nutritious. Belamkanda should be provided with moderate watering. During the growing season, the plant needs complex mineral fertilizers about twice a month. As for organic fertilizers, they need to be applied only when planting a plant or in the spring. It is worth noting that the plant is not always able to endure the winter period of time. Therefore, the belamcanda should be dug up in the fall and transplanted into a pot. In winter, Belamcanda is kept indoors, watering should be rare and moderate, and the plant will not need additional feeding. In spring, the plant can be re-planted in the open ground. For indoor conditions for belamcanda, the following soil is suitable: a mixture of turf, peat and sand.

Plant propagation occurs both by seeds and by dividing the rhizome. Seeds are planted in open ground in October, or in the spring, seedlings are grown from them. For seedlings, sow seeds in a moist substrate in February or May.
