To stock up on calendula medicinal raw materials for a year, it is not at all necessary for it to have a separate bed. Several bushes growing singly in the garden bloom almost the whole summer. And you will have to go out to collect the medicinal plant every two or three days, because it is worth clearing one bush of flowers, their place is instantly taken by new blossoming buds. However, if there are several extra unoccupied square meters in the garden and you want to use them profitably - take them with calendula, it will definitely come in handy

Useful properties of medicinal marigold

Calendula or marigold is a very effective anti-inflammatory and bactericidal agent. Alcohol tincture is used as an antiseptic, and a decoction of dried flowers is used to strengthen immunity and gargle during colds.

Biologically active substances that calendula contains are the worst enemies of staphylococci and streptococci. And, if there are no medical contraindications, for people who, in the cold season, are prone to inflammation of the tonsils and other catarrhal processes in the oral cavity and pharynx, it will be useful for prevention in the summer to start gargling with calendula decoction three times a day.

Conditions for growing calendula

Calendula seeds can remain viable for up to 5 years. The plant is undemanding to soils, but it will grow poorly on swampy or sandy soils. Calendula loves sun and moisture, and with a sufficient amount of both, shoots can be observed within 5 days after sowing.

Calendula can be placed singly in potato beds, next to cucumbers and other vegetables. It will not only grow well in the neighborhood with them, but also scare off some parasitic insects that cannot tolerate its scent. But you should not sow calendula in large batches in the garden, as it consumes a lot of nutrients and greatly depletes the soil.

You can use it in a crop rotation with vegetable crops of few years, under which organic fertilizers were previously applied. But it is not recommended to occupy the same area for several years in a row for the same reason of the great appetite of marigolds for nutrients in the soil.

Calendula care

Since autumn, the area on which it is planned to place medicinal marigolds is filled with organic fertilizers. Presowing soil preparation for a calendula flower bed includes harrowing and leveling the soil in spring. Seeds begin to germinate at an air temperature of + 20 ° C. If the soil becomes firm and dense before this moment, the beds are loosened again, working the soil to a depth of 5 cm.

To make it convenient to collect flowers in the future, the seeds are placed in a belt way with sufficient aisles in which it will be convenient to stand and work. When shoots appear, you will need to monitor the cleanliness of the beds, preventing the appearance of weeds. In addition, it will be necessary to loosen the soil several times per season.

Collecting calendula flowers

Flowering begins in 1, 5-2 months from the date of seed germination. By this time, the marigolds grow to a height of 50-60 cm. This is an annual herb, but it branches very well. Flowers from the bush must be collected regularly. This stimulates the formation of even more buds, and the medicinal value from this does not decrease in the least.

When starting to harvest, it should be borne in mind that the juice released from the stem when the flower is pinched off is very sticky. And if you have to collect a large amount of raw materials, it will be very difficult to wash it off your hands later. Therefore, it is more convenient to do this with thin household gloves.
