Asparagus rust

Asparagus rust has gained fame as one of the most harmful diseases in this crop. Plants attacked by this disease give a very small number of shoots and noticeably lag behind in development. Infected shoots are distinguished by poor taste, and closer to the end of summer, diseased crops turn yellow ahead of time. As a rule, their vegetation stops even before the root system has time to form, and even before tiny buds are laid at the base of the stems. As a result, the yield of asparagus is significantly reduced

A few words about the disease

Asparagus rust goes through four main stages of development. With the onset of spring, numerous yellowish specks begin to form on young shoots with black dots of pycnidia located in the center. And along the periphery of these unpleasant spots are small oval pads of etsidia.

With the onset of summer, rust appears already in the form of convex rusty-brown pads. As a rule, such pads appear on cladodes and on young stems. A little later, they all turn black.

Asparagus rust is caused by the harmful fungus Puccinia asparagi DC. In the summer, the harmful attack spreads through urediospores. And some time later, the formation of tleithospores (winter spores) begins in the pustules, in the form of which the pathogen overwinters. Diseased wild plants often act as a source of infection.

The susceptibility of asparagus to rusting increases markedly in areas characterized by a close occurrence of groundwater, with a significant amount of precipitation, as well as on heavy soils that are not permeable to air and water. In addition, the susceptibility of plants can be influenced by their mineral nutrition. Especially often, the development of the disease is stimulated by an excess of nitrogen (most often this occurs when there is a lack of potassium).

You can encounter asparagus rust in almost all Russian regions - sometimes this disease seriously devastates areas. It is noteworthy that in the absence of young plantations nearby, rust on fruiting asparagus is extremely rare. Such an interesting feature is due to the fact that in May-June, when the pathogen fungus spreads especially actively, the growing stems are still covered with soil.

How to fight

Different varieties of asparagus can be affected by rust differently, therefore, when growing this crop, attention should first of all be paid to resistant varieties. The least affected are American varieties bred in the 1920s - Mary Washington and Marta Washington.

Also, between adult and young asparagus plantings, spatial isolation must be observed (at least - from 300 to 400 m). And weeds also need to be removed regularly. In addition, it is important to try to limit the amount of nitrogen fertilizers applied and, if possible, increase the dosage of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Foliar dressing with useful microelements will also serve well. And to eliminate rust, it is necessary to increase the air circulation around the plants. If this measure does not give the expected results, you can try to lay a new bed, equipped with excellent drainage.

Infected asparagus shoots must be promptly cut and burned, plant residues must be destroyed in a timely manner, and the plants must be sprayed with one percent Bordeaux liquid immediately after harvesting the shoots. Cutting off diseased stems in autumn and spring and then burning them helps to avoid the transmission of destructive adversity in the next year.

As a preventive measure, growing asparagus can be sprayed with Bordeaux liquid or other antifungal compounds throughout the summer.
