The African tropics gave the world a surprisingly hardy plant, the succulent stems of which store water reserves for the dry season. Leathery bright green leaves shine, and bright and abundant flowers adorn the shrub for a long period. In our environment, the plant is grown indoors, admiring natural creativity
Rod Adenium
Only one species belongs to the genus Adenium - Adenium obesum. This species has a number of subspecies, which are sometimes considered independent.
Habit
In the tropics of Africa and East Asia, this succulent plant reaches for the sun, growing to a height of three meters. When grown as a houseplant, its dimensions are much more modest. Bushes grow up to 50-60 centimeters in height.
Adenium belongs to stem succulents. That is, the plant stores moisture reserves in its stems with a strongly thickened base. The juice running along the stems is poisonous, so you need to be careful when dealing with the plant. Some African tribes grease battle arrows with juice.
Inverse lanceolate narrow leaves are held in short petioles by branched stems. Their surface is leathery, shiny and bright green.
The main advantage of the plant is its beautifully colored flowers, similar to oleander flowers. The flowers are very sticky, have no aroma, and form apical inflorescences-shields. Flowers have a tubular corolla, pink or carmine, sometimes with a white central part. Adenium blooms, as a rule, profusely and for a long time, taking a break in the winter dormant period.
Varieties and subspecies
A large number of varieties have been bred, differing in color of flowers:
•
"White" - with completely white flowers.
•
"Bangkok pink" - The white flowers of this variety have red edges.
•
"Motley" - its leaves are creamy green, and the flowers are white-pink.
The existing subspecies of Adenium differ from the original species in larger leaves, a variety of colors of leaves and flowers, and more abundant flowering. For example:
•
Bohemian subspecies (Adenium obesum boheminaum) has larger leaves.
•
Adenium Lugard (Adenium lugardii) also differs in leaf size.
•
Multiflorous subspecies (Adenium obesum multiflorum) produces an especially abundant flowering.
•
Somali subspecies (Adenium obesum somalense) flaunts bluish green, lanceolate, very narrow leaves.
Growing
A child of Africa loves well-lit places and is not afraid of direct sunlight.
The soil for it is prepared from two parts of fertile garden land and one part of peat. When planting a plant on a bucket of soil, add 15 grams of complex mineral fertilizer.
A succulent plant loves discipline when it comes to watering. The soil should not be allowed to dry out even in winter when watering is limited. Once a month (except for the period of winter dormancy), watering is combined with mineral feeding.
To form a beautiful bush shape, light pruning is carried out at the end of the dormant period. They do this taking precautions, since the milky sap of the plant is poisonous.
The plant will not tolerate temperatures below plus 10 degrees.
Reproduction
Propagated by seeds and cuttings. Seeds are brought, for example, from Thailand, where the plant is grown in nurseries. There is a huge selection of seeds on the Internet that promise the most fantastic shades of flowers.
When grafted, the plant can bloom in the first year of planting.
Diseases and pests
May be affected by worms.
But the main enemies for Adenium are low air temperatures and a lack or excess of moisture in the soil. Therefore, a clear watering regime is important.
