Gardeners welcome Barberry not only for its healing abilities, known to people since ancient times, but also for its decorative effect. Sunny yellow blooms in spring, bright leaves in autumn and red-black berries hanging on branches until frost are the hallmark of the plant. Thorny bush branches are a reliable and effective barrier from intrusive glances and uninvited aliens

Rod Barberry

Five hundred species of shrubs naturally represent the genus Barberry (Berberis). Depending on the surrounding climate, they can be evergreen or deciduous, growing up to 3 meters in height.

From the shoots, as a rule, armed with sharp thorns, short branches depart, at the ends of which there are bundles of leathery leaves. Deciduous species of barberry paint their leaves in bright colors in the fall.

Single flowers are rare. Most often, they gather at the ends of the shoots, forming elongated clusters of yellow shades, turning by autumn into decorative clusters of red or black berries.

Varieties

β€’

Common barberry (Berberis vulgaris) - A common species in the wild, cultivated as an ornamental plant. Bright clusters of red berries hang against the background of oval leaves with a jagged edge.

β€’

Barberry lycium (Berberis lycium) - purple berries, covered with a waxy bloom, appear by autumn in place of the bright yellow flowers of a semi-evergreen shrub.

β€’

Narrow-leaved barberry (Berberis x stenophylla) is an evergreen hybrid created not by breeders, but by nature itself. Brushes of golden-yellow flowers in April abundantly cover the curved long branches of the shrub. By the fall, they turn into clusters of bright red berries.

β€’

Barberry Thunberg (Berberis thunbergii) is a popular species widely used for hedging. The leaves of the bush have a double color: on the upper side they are light green, and on the lower side they are gray. Autumn brings both sides together, painting them in bright colors. Red decorative berries are replacing the numerous yellow flowers. Varieties have been developed that differ in a variety of leaf colors. For example, the variety "Dark purple" has red leaves; and in the Rose Glow variety, nature has painted bright pink and silver patterns on the purple surface of the leaves.

Growing

The thorny and bright barberry forms impenetrable hedges that can be easily formed by decorative pruning. In this it is not inferior to boxwood, which is more picky about the conditions of existence, and therefore, in regions of the temperate climate of Russia, barberry is very popular. Moreover, the barberry is frost-resistant, drought-resistant, "digests" the polluted air of industrial cities, not being picky about the soil (except for the fact that some types of barberry do not like waterlogged soils). Watering is not required for adult plants.

Barberries look great in single plantings, as well as in small groups on flower beds and borders. Dwarf species have found shelter in rocky gardens. Barberries are grown as a potting culture, decorating balconies, garden gazebos, terraces and verandas.

Healing abilities

You can read more about the healing abilities of barberry here:

Let's talk only about one topical ability of the plant - to help people overcome addiction to smoking, drugs, alcohol, as well as radiation injuries. In such cases, juice with pulp from berries rubbed through a sieve, peeled from the stalks, helps. Add honey to the juice and drink healing nectar 2-3 times a day for half a glass.

For children with low appetite, juice or jelly made from ripe berries will become a healthy and pleasant dish for breakfast or lunch, stimulating the digestive organs to work, increasing appetite.

Enemies

The resistance of barberry to diseases is sometimes disturbed by fungi, which cause rotting of the roots, or the appearance of spots on the leaves. Plants infected with bacteria or viruses must be destroyed.
