Each vegetable, as they say, has its own annoying fly. The biggest danger is that such a fly (be it cabbage, carrot, onion or beet) can spoil the crop, if not eradicate it at all. How to protect crops from vegetable flies?
How to get rid of the cabbage fly?
If you do not help the cabbage get rid of the cabbage fly and do nothing, the cabbage will eventually turn blue and wither. The cabbage fly lays its eggs on the stem of the cabbage (at the very bottom of it). When hatching from eggs, the larvae eat not only the stalk of the cabbage, but also its leaves. To fight the cabbage fly, if you want to stay with the harvest, you need to start from early spring, when it is first planted in the ground.
Plant the celery fly, which the cabbage fly does not like, between the cabbage beds. She cannot stand his scent. This is the first step. Second, when you plant the cabbage in the ground, sprinkle it with the following mixture in June, which will scare away the cabbage fly and the desire to breed on your cabbage. The mixture is prepared as follows: pharmacy chamomile mixed with sand, small tobacco or its dust and ash. All in equal amounts.
The bottom of a matured cabbage stalk can be protected like this. Put on it a circle cut from an old film with a diameter of about 35-40 cm. The circle should be placed at the very base of the cabbage stalk and sprinkle it with earth, you can sprinkle it around it with the very fragrant mixture described above.
Getting rid of the onion fly
If you do not get rid of and prevent the appearance of an onion fly, at the end of summer you can get not a crop of excellent onions, but rotten, unappetizing, foul-smelling fruits. Prevention of the appearance of onion flies is necessary every summer season.
The steps are very simple but powerful. As soon as you notice that the feathers of the onion have reached 5 cm, treat the onion garden with a saline solution in which 10 liters of water and 3 tablespoons of salt are well mixed. From above, you need to water the ground with dandelion infusion. You can make it like this: a dandelion (roots, leaves, flowers) is cut into about 300 grams, filled with 10-12 liters of water, infused, filtered and the infusion is ready.
After 7-10 days, the procedure must be repeated, and you can take a little more salt in a saline solution. In July, a similar onion processing procedure is needed again.
Carrot fly and how to deal with it
The carrot fly is a shiny black very small insect with a red head with a green tint. This fly loves not only carrots, its vegetation, but also excessively moist soil.
Therefore, it is recommended to plant carrots initially in those places in the summer cottage where there is a soil hill, and not a lowland, where there will be drier carrots. There will be no excessively moist soil where the carrots are planted, even without special treatment the carrot fly will not survive.
The following preventive rules against carrot flies are planting carrots early, weeding them often, thinning the beds. When weeding and thinning carrots, remove the torn greens away from the garden bed, as the carrot fly smells carrot roots from a distance and will be attracted to the garden bed.
Another good means of counteracting carrot flies is a strong infusion of onion peels. And spread the onion husks from the infusion between the growing carrots, protecting their roots and leaves from the attacks of the carrot fly.
Beet flea or fly
Beets are resistant to many diseases, but if attacked by a beet flea or a fly, the entire crop will be covered with large black holes or voids, while the beet tops will turn yellow and dry.
Beetroot fleas are small black insects with a bronze tint. First, they live in the spring near beet beds, multiplying on weeds, and then move to beets when they sprout.
It is necessary to fight them in the summer and the way to deal with the beet flea is very simple. Dust beet seedlings with a mixture of tobacco dust and slaked lime. The beet fly or flea beetle will immediately retreat from the beds.
