Even a novice vegetable grower can do seed growing. The variety is used as a starting material, not a hybrid. In the latter version, you will not get the same type of plants. The splitting of traits will go along the parental forms. The seed production process will take two years. Let's not waste time
A bit of history
In the last century, in the Russian outback, our grandmothers themselves received white cabbage seeds. They weren't hoping for stores. The proverb: “Your shirt is closer to your body” fully reflects the attitude towards purchased seeds of the older generation. This was largely justified. Germination and quality of "home" seeds were much higher.
Each grain was harvested by hand as it ripened. In the garden, 1, maximum 2 varieties were grown in different ends or areas. Therefore, there was no cross-pollination between them. The grade has been maintained for many years.
Storage bookmark
Cabbage is a two-year culture. To obtain seeds, it is necessary to leave the harvest of the current year for storage. Having planted it next year, we will receive full-fledged seeds.
In autumn, before frost, the best specimens of mother liquors with dense, healthy heads of cabbage, typical characteristics of the variety, are selected. Dig it with a shovel along with the root system. Sent to storage in the cellar.
There are several ways of wintering queen cells:
1. Prikop. Take a box or bucket of sand. The roots are buried in slightly moistened soil. If desired, in late varieties, the leaves are cut out, leaving the apical bud. After 2 weeks, the remains of the petioles are removed.
2. On the lattice. Hammer down a wooden lattice with a large mesh. The mothers are laid together with the forks on the structure, the roots are lowered into the cracks. Alternatively, the lower part, together with a lump of earth, is wrapped with a film.
3. Suspension. Heads of cabbage are hung upside down under the ceiling of the vault.
In the cellars, the temperature is maintained at 1-2 degrees Celsius, the humidity is at the level of 90-95%. The spoiled leaves are removed immediately. Cover plates are left on the heads of cabbage. When removing the fork before storage, the stump is powdered with chalk or ash to reduce the influence of harmful diseases.
In the south, mother liquors are left to winter in the ground. High wooden boxes are thrown from above, covered with straw mats.
Landing in the ground
A month before planting, a stump is cut out of a fork (if this operation has not been previously performed). Give the wounds time to heal. If you cut off the leaves just before planting, disease, sun, rains cause root rot.
The mothers are temporarily added to greenhouses, greenhouses, shading with straw mats from the outside or with a dark non-woven material. Dried petioles are removed after 2 weeks.
The landing site is sunny, sheltered from the wind. The beds are prepared by adding rotted manure, a glass of ash, a 1 square meter superphosphate matchbox for digging. Planting pattern 60cm in a row, 70cm row spacing.
Deep holes are dug at the end of April. Watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The roots of the mother liquor are spread. Sprinkle with soil, compacting the earth around the stumps. 5-10 cm of the crown is left on the surface. Set the pegs.
Care
Regular watering at first helps to form a good root system. After a month, they are reduced to 2 times a week. Top dressing 2 times a month with complex fertilizers "Kemira", "Zdraven" contribute to the formation of full-bodied seeds.
When the peduncles reach a height of 0.5 meters, the stems are tied to the pegs. As they grow, they grab shoots at a new level. Leave the central increments. They are the first to give seeds that have time to ripen in our conditions. The side ones are removed so that the plant does not waste energy on them.
Harvesting
Harvested selectively as they ripen, starting in mid-August, individual pods. Let them dry a little. Then they are cleaned from the flaps, dried to the end. The second batch is cut off together with a part of the stem "bouquets" - a massive collection. They are hung in a shady, ventilated place, underneath the newspaper. After drying, the grains are released. Packed in paper bags.
The shelf life of seed is 3-5 years at a constant positive temperature. From one plant, 10-50 g of full-weight seeds are collected.
Getting your own seed for the varieties of white cabbage you like is a guarantee of good quality and crop yield.
