In the summer months, the abundance of greens pleases lovers of all kinds of salads. Spinach, chard, celery grow in the beds by leaps and bounds - just have time to collect them. Competent technology of collection and re-sowing will help turn the beds into a continuous container for growing vitamin greens for a long time. Also, one should not forget about top dressing, hilling and think about the early harvest of next year
A diverse family of salads
The head lettuce planted in spring and growing, romaine, chicory lettuce are fed with ammonium nitrate in June. It is continuously removed as it grows up for consumption. In the vacated places, you can immediately plant new seedlings. In order for it to be abundant, seeds must be sown in a nursery every 2 weeks. It is important to select varieties that are intended for cultivation in summer - in conditions of long daylight hours. These include late varieties of brittle and buttery salads.
The asparagus salad is harvested in late summer and autumn months. To do this, sowing seeds is carried out in June. Depending on the weather, they can be planted both in the nursery and directly in the open field.
Endive seedlings are transferred to open ground from the second decade of June. It is unassuming to its predecessors, therefore it takes root well after any early crops that vacated their sites at the beginning of summer. The only caveat is that it is advisable for endives to take a place with light, fertile, well-drained soil of neutral acidity.
Mineral fertilizers will help to enrich the soil before planting endive:
• ammonium nitrate - 0.3 kg per m2;
• superphosphate - 0.4 kg;
• 40% potash salt.
Endive is propagated throughout June, both by seedlings and by sowing seeds in open ground. In the latter case, there will be a need to thin out the seedlings. Leave about 15 cm between the plants.
Caring for other leafy vegetables
Unlike its closest relative - canteen beet - Swiss chard is valued for its taste and nutritional qualities not of roots, but vershoks! If the leaf beet seedlings were not thinned out in May, it is not too late to do so in June. Moreover, it is not at all a pity to do this, because this is a waste-free production - delicate leaves and petioles can be immediately used for food.
After thinning the beds, it is recommended to feed with ammonium nitrate. By the end of June, the large lower leaves can be harvested from the plants. There is no need to pull the Swiss chard out by the roots; the petioles should also be cut carefully so as not to damage the buds - they are still capable of producing a new crop of succulent leaves.
In order to harvest dense crops of spinach from summer to late autumn, the leaves are also carefully cut or limited to cutting the tops. This technique stimulates even more fruitful branching of the bushes. As a rule, fresh green mass builds up and regains volume in 7-10 days. If you do not plan to eat fresh herbs in the next week, it is better to freeze the spinach.
In June, hilling of leaf celery is carried out. Thanks to this technique, the rosette will not be loose, the plant will form vertically. The higher the hilling is done, the better the whitening of the petioles will be. During this period, it is useful to feed the celery with nitrogen.
The vegetable purslane sown in May is harvested, and a new one is sown to replace it. It will sprout and give a new crop in a month and a half.
Well, what is a salad without fragrant parsley? Fragrant greens are harvested throughout the summer, and begin from the moment when a couple of large leaves are formed on the plant. If you plan to get early greens next year, then the parsley harvest is harvested along with root crops.
