The technology of growing oat root, which is not difficult in agrotechnical terms, makes it an attractive crop for cultivation. Healthy vitamins add another plus to this wonderful plant. We will learn simple techniques for growing a tragopogon
Reproduction
Propagated goatbeard by seeds. Initially buy a pack from a store. In subsequent years, they receive their own planting material.
For the seed plants, a separate area is laid outside the crop rotation, closer to the fence. 3-5 plants are enough. The distance between them is set to 40 by 40 cm. In the first year, the roots are left to winter under the snow, covering them with spruce branches from mice.
The next season, they are fed twice with complex fertilizer: in early spring, during the formation of arrows. "Bouquets" are tied to pegs (sticks above the plants). After pollination, they put on rag caps. Otherwise, ripe seeds will be blown up by the wind.
In the phase of the beginning of the formation of "fluffy", cut off the stems. They put it in the water. There they undergo final ripening. The finished grains are separated from the tuft. Dry on the newspaper. Packed in paper bags.
Shelf life is no more than 2 years. Seeds of goatbeard quickly lose their germination. For sowing, they take the harvest of last year.
Sowing
The soil is prepared in the fall. On poor soils, rotted organic fertilizers (compost, humus), nitroammofoska are applied. The acidic reaction of the medium is neutralized with lime fertilizers. Dig a shovel onto the bayonet.
Plants are not afraid of cold weather, so sowing begins early, approximately in mid-April. At this time, there is enough moisture in the soil from the melted snow, so the germination is more friendly.
Before sowing, the grains are soaked for half a day in an infusion of ash (a tablespoon is placed on a liter of liquid) to soften the thick shell. Then it is slightly dried, for uniform distribution over the bed, mixed with filler (sand, peat). Cut grooves every 25 cm. Spill with a warm solution of potassium permanganate.
The seeding depth is 1-1.5 cm. In the row, 5 cm distances are set to begin with. Sprinkle with earth, compact the soil by hand. After a week or two at a temperature of + 3 … 5 degrees, the first seedlings appear. To prevent young shoots from being drowned out by weeds, a "lighthouse" culture (radish) is mixed with the seeds of the goat bark. It indicates the direction of the rows, so loosening of the row spacings can be started before the emergence of the main product.
In the phase of cotyledonous leaves, the plants are thinned out, leaving a distance of 8-10 cm between them.
Care
Regular weeding helps to deal with "competitors". Shallow loosening after watering, keep moisture in the soil.
They feed 1-2 times a season with the complex fertilizer "Kemira Lux" a tablespoon in a full bucket of water, with an interval of 2-3 weeks.
Watering 2 times a week during drought. Root crops that are stuck in the first year are removed from the garden. From them, lignified roots are obtained that are not suitable for food.
Mulching the beds with sawdust, peat, humus helps to retain moisture in the soil, prevents its compaction.
Cleaning and storage
Root crops of the oat root are dug out in late September - early October, and the harvest is finished before the onset of frost. They try not to damage the succulent roots. Milky juice flows out of the wounds, impairing the quality of storage. Such specimens often rot. Therefore, they are used immediately for processing.
The leaves are cut at a height of 2 cm. Shake off the ground, lightly dry in the sun. They are put into storage in a cellar, sprinkled with layers of sand, in boxes.
Part of the crop is left in the soil until spring. It is dug up in early spring before fresh greenery grows back.
We will analyze the medicinal properties of the common goatbeard in the next article.

Oat Root
Oat root - vegetable culture; root plant of the Asteraceae family, or Asteraceae. The homeland of the plant is considered to be the Mediterranean. It is also actively cultivated there and used for culinary and medicinal purposes. In small quantities, oat root is cultivated in Western Europe, the Baltic States and some regions of the United States.
How To Recognize Oat Diseases?
Everyone who grows oats sooner or later is faced with various diseases of this crop. However, making an appropriate "diagnosis" is often quite problematic. To facilitate this task, you need to familiarize yourself with the main symptoms of the most common ailments. And then it will not be difficult to distinguish between dusty and covered smut or crown rust from stem rust
Oat Root. Medicinal Properties
In Western countries (France, Italy, North America), the common goat (oat root) is grown in the fields in large volumes. Many restaurants buy root vegetables, prepare diet meals with an unusual taste. When boiled, it resembles fresh oysters or tender fish
Oat Root Or Vegetable Oysters
The Latin name tragopogon is known only in the scientific world, consists of two words, translated into Russian as "goat's beard". For a long time, in Russia, this plant was called the devil's beard or the goat-beard. Baskets with unripe seeds look like a goat's beard from afar, the leaves look like leeks. What is this mysterious culture?
Beet Root Aphid - A Thunderstorm Of Root Crops
Beet root aphid is an ubiquitous pest that attacks quinoa and other swan plants in addition to beets. It is considered especially dangerous because in a relatively short period of time from May to October, it is capable of giving from eight to ten generations. As a rule, the number of these parasites increases markedly in July and August. The vegetation attacked by them withers and dies, which adversely affects the harvest of long-awaited root crops
