Adult plants thrive at temperatures between fifteen and eighteen degrees. In hot climates, cabbage grows more slowly, since the plant is substantially adapted to temperate, but not southern, climates. Heat-resistant varieties of cabbage are still present and are very popular in the southern part of Russia. There they are in a favorable atmosphere for themselves, first of all, due to the fact that they can maintain a water balance for a very long time. Other varieties will simply wither in conditions of excessive heat. The most sensitive period of cabbage is the phase when the plant is just beginning to start flowering.

Watering cabbage

In terms of moisture, cabbage culture is very demanding. Water scarcity can prolong the growing season and weaken the formation of heads of cabbage. Also, in this case, the number of underruns often increases, and the fruits themselves grow very small. In the southern regions, comfortable indicators of soil moisture are 80 percent, and air - from fifty to seventy-five percent. But before harvesting, the humidity should be even higher. The plant requires most of all water during the formation of the rosette and the formation of heads of cabbage. One copy of the cabbage culture can consume up to ten liters of water during the day. Seedless types of cabbage are much easier to tolerate lack of moisture. In a very long period of dry weather, it can be seen that the amount of harvest will be markedly reduced.

Therefore, it is recommended to maintain the moisture content of the soil and air through timely daily irrigation procedures. But excessive moisture, despite the cabbage's love for water, is still very harmful to the plant. Even prolonged rains can negatively affect the development of the plant. If the excess moisture is observed for a very long time, then it is likely that the growth of the culture will stop, and the waxy coating and unnatural color of the leaves will increase. Most of the roots in such a situation often die off.

Cabbage and lighting

Cabbage is a type of plant that enjoys long daylight hours. As a result, culture will grow much faster and more efficiently. A seventeen to eighteen hour day is considered the norm for a vegetable. Lack of lighting can contribute to poor seedling development and elongation of the plant. During the formation of a head of cabbage in such a situation, the fruits may begin to grow densely, which leads to a decrease in the amount of the crop. It is not necessary to grow cabbage crops in shaded areas, next to tall shrubs and trees in gardens and in personal plots.

What kind of soil should be used to grow cabbage?

Different types of soils work well with cabbage, although light and sandy soils should still be avoided. Cabbage, planted near water (rivers, ponds, reservoirs), feels very good. Here, the soil is almost always highly fertile. Also, don't plant cabbage in wetlands or very acidic soil. It is best to pick up a soil with a slightly acidic reaction of a soil solution with an indicator of about six. If the acidity is higher than this indicator, then lime must be added to it. You also need to choose the soil based on the ripening time of the fruits. When growing late-ripening varieties in loams, high yield rates can be observed, especially if mineral fertilizers and organic matter are added to the ground. While cabbage is in the seedling stage, it requires a lot of nitrogen, and already when heads are formed, phosphorus and potassium become the predominant components. In addition, calcium intake is very important for cabbage.
