Incredible drawing for a modest flower

Our "Mother Nature" is so amazing if she easily creates inflorescences of such beauty as in salpiglossis notched. I look at him and never cease to be amazed at the complexity and quirkiness of the drawing on his funnel-shaped flower. Be sure to plant this plant in your garden to make every day seem wonderful

For many years I have been planting salpiglossis in flower beds near my house. Each time I watch with interest the opening of new buds. Presented by the most incredible shades: dark purple, lilac, yellow, crimson, red, blue, white. Triangular-curved yellow stripes look especially beautiful against a dark velvet background. In places where the petals grow together, they are refracted at an acute angle, forming a complex geometric pattern. The next strip is located strictly parallel to the first, repeating its outline. Flowering continues from mid-July until frost.

The bulk of the leaves with wide, slightly carved along the edge of the plates forms a basal rosette. A few small narrow leaves rise upward. The stem is slightly sticky, slightly pubescent. In the upper part, it actively branches, forming a lush bush. At the end of each shoot, there are several inflorescences that open gradually.

In the literature I read that pinching the growth point increases branching. In practice, she did not do this, leaving nature to perfect this modest, but at the same time very original flower.

Varietal variety

The stem length ranges from 40 to 90 cm. Tall specimens are represented by the following varieties: Grandiflora, Ali Baba; medium size - Bolero, Casino mix, Fireworks.

They look great in the middle of a flower bed, after undersized plants. You shouldn't take them far into the background. The variegated color of the inflorescences merges into one blurry spot. Perfect for rabatki, along the paths.

In recent years, dwarf specimens have been created: Festival, Flamenco, Velvet Dolly, Kew Blue. Planted in pots or flowerpots, they will decorate balconies, terraces, gazebos. With sufficient lighting, they are grown even in a room on a window.

Reproduction

An annual plant. Each year it has to be propagated by seed again. They are very small, so I sow on the surface in mid-April on the beds prepared in the fall. I moisten the soil, cover the arcs with a film. Shoots appear in 2 weeks. I water and feed as needed. Monthly seedlings are ready to be transplanted to a permanent place. It is not worth delaying this process. Mature plants recover longer after relocation.

Preferences

Loves fertile loose soil with deep groundwater. Sunny places, sheltered from the wind. Tall varieties require a peg tie. It is thermophilic, does not tolerate frost, drought, waterlogging.

Looks great in group plantings with small islands against a background of monochromatic greenery. Combines with lobelia, seaside cineraria with silvery leaves, lobularia.

Planting and leaving

Plants are placed in a flower bed with an interval of 20-25 cm from each other. The earth is well moistened, the root is carefully spread, the soil is pressed on all sides. The first few days are shaded from direct sunlight.

Reduce watering by mulching with compost, fine sawdust. They are fed once every 2 weeks with Agricola fertilizer or herbal infusions (wormwood, nettle). Loosening the row spacings helps in weed control.

Withered inflorescences are removed, preserving the decorative appearance of the plant, stimulating the formation of new buds.

The most beautiful specimens are left for seeds. Their germination capacity lasts 3 years.

Salpiglossis inflorescences with an unusual pattern will appeal to everyone, without exception. When placing it near the house, your flower bed will sparkle with new, bright colors!
